That afternoon, Jillian took Stella to the mall.

It was likely Stella's first time in such a crowded, bustling environment. Terrified, she gripped Jillian's fingers tightly, darting her eyes around at every sudden noise like a frightened little rabbit.

Jillian took her to a clothing store, bought her things she liked, and then brought her to the baking class.

By the time the class finished, evening had fallen.

Jillian took her to a private restaurant, The Gilded Clove. They ordered a few simple sides and a bowl of rice. Just as she handed the menu back...

Jillian spotted the general manager walking ahead, personally leading the way for guests.

Right behind him was Sylvia, holding Connor's hand.

Jillian's hand froze mid-air, her eyes locking onto them.

A suffocating wave of grievance instantly spread through her chest.

*This* was the urgent business Connor had?

He had canceled their plans just to have dinner with Sylvia.

That day, she had asked Connor to choose between his mother and Sylvia, and he had claimed he wanted both.

But the truth was, he had already made his choice.

Noticing her dazed expression, the waitress gave her a curious look.

Stella stared at Jillian unblinking.

Realizing she had lost her composure, Jillian quickly pulled her hand back.

"That will be all," she said.

"Hurry up, Con. Professor Xavier's schedule is incredibly tight. When he heard how much you admire him, he specifically carved out time just to see you today," Sylvia urged.

Connor nodded enthusiastically and picked up his pace to keep up.

Jillian only caught fragments of their conversation.

When the food arrived at her table, she finally couldn't hold back anymore and sent Connor a voice message.

"Have you eaten yet?"

Connor didn't reply immediately.

A few moments later, he answered, "Just about to start."

Jillian let out a quiet breath of relief.

Sylvia had just led him into a private dining room, so they were probably ordering right now. He wasn't lying when he said he was just about to start.

It proved her son didn't lie to her about everything.

He was just selectively hiding the truth.

This restaurant was open to the public, and the ground floor catered to regular diners with relatively affordable prices.

The second and third floors were strictly reserved for VIPs, where the dishes and prices were in an entirely different league.

Naturally, the manager paid no mind to average walk-in customers like Jillian.

"Mr. Quincy, is there a problem?" the manager asked nervously.

"No. I just don't want to be disturbed by anyone during my meal."

"Of course, absolutely," the manager quickly promised.

Killian stepped forward, continuing up the stairs.

Suddenly, he paused again, his gaze landing on the little girl sitting next to Jillian. He frowned.

He didn't recall any of Jillian's friends having a daughter. In fact, Jillian barely had any friends to begin with.

Daniel Langley was one, but he was single and childless.

None of that mattered to Killian anyway.

He continued his walk upstairs.

When he entered the private room, Sylvia was already enthusiastically introducing Connor to Silas Xavier.
