"Connor!" Jillian scolded sharply.
Connor glared up at her, utterly defiant.
Jillian swallowed her frustration and knelt down to explain. "Stella isn't trying to steal me from you. I'm just looking after her for a little while."
Connor clearly wasn't buying it. He let out an angry huff, crossed his arms over his chest, and refused to say another word.
Jillian gave him a helpless look.
She had intended to introduce them so they could be friends. She completely underestimated how violently her son would reject the idea.
But it made sense. No other child had ever occupied Jillian's attention before, so Connor naturally believed she belonged exclusively to him.
"Con, weren't we having such a great time at dinner?" Sylvia stepped forward, stroking Connor's hair to soothe him.
Connor's eyes instantly welled with tears. He felt even more strongly that Sylvia was the only one who truly understood him and cared about his feelings.
"What's wrong?" Killian asked in a low voice.
Both adults stood behind Connor, painting the perfect picture of a unified family.
"Mr. Quincy."
Daniel stood up in greeting, pulling a clearly terrified Stella behind him to shield her. Sensing his protective intent, Stella instinctively pressed herself closer to his leg.
"Mr. Langley. What a coincidence," Killian replied flatly.
His gaze then swept coldly over Jillian.
Jillian stood up to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Daniel.
Unknowing guests in the restaurant glanced over, assuming it was simply two families bumping into each other.
Only those involved knew how utterly absurd the scene was.
Jillian's own husband and son were standing opposite her, flanked by Sylvia.
Meanwhile, Jillian, Daniel, and Stella stood together, sharing zero actual ties.
Oblivious to the tension, Silas pushed up his glasses.
"Connor, this is your mother?" he asked, looking at Jillian in surprise.
In his mind, the scheming woman who had trapped Killian with a pregnancy would be unimaginably vulgar.
And yet, he completely failed to recognize her.
Connor finally regained his sense of superiority and boasted proudly, "Mom, Dad and Sylvia introduced me to Professor Xavier today. I'm going to be his student from now on. Aren't you happy for me?"
Jillian stood frozen, unresponsive.
She simply couldn't force the word "happy" out of her mouth.
Despite his intense disdain for Jillian, Silas still offered his hand. "I didn't expect to meet Mrs. Quincy. Connor clearly takes after you."
With his status, offering such a compliment was purely out of respect for Killian.
Yet Jillian just stared at his extended hand, refusing to take it.
A flicker of awkwardness crossed Silas's face.
"Jillian," Sylvia smiled, "Silas is still an elder. No matter how much you resent me, you shouldn't disrespect him."
Jillian remained completely motionless.
Killian shot Jillian an icy glare. "Let's go."
