He was speaking to Connor.
Jillian watched the three of them walk away.
She took Stella's small hand. "Let's go too, Stella."
Stella remained expressionless, allowing herself to be led.
Daniel spoke up. "I'll drive you back."
Jillian didn't bother with polite refusals. She and Stella followed Daniel out to his car.
He opened the door for them, offering a warning. "I don't have a child seat."
"It's fine, the regular seatbelt will do."
She leaned in to buckle Stella up before climbing into the car herself.
Not far away, from the inside of a luxury car, a man's gaze drifted over aimlessly, his long, pale fingers tapping rhythmically against the steering wheel.
Just as Daniel was about to start the engine.
Jillian's phone suddenly rang.
"Come over here. Connor wants you."
Jillian looked out the window in surprise.
Killian's headlights flashed.
Daniel noticed it too.
"Is that Killian?"
"What does he want?"
"Nothing. He just wants me to go over for a minute."
Jillian turned to reassure Stella, then opened the door and walked over to Killian's car.
Through the half-open window, she realized Sylvia wasn't inside.
It caught her off guard. She had assumed that since she wasn't living at home, Killian would be staying with Sylvia.
"What is it?"
"Get in," Killian ordered, his tone leaving absolutely no room for negotiation.
Jillian hesitated.
She didn't want to look like she was at Killian's beck and call, but after only a second of internal resistance, she opened the door and slid into the back seat.
"Her medical treatments and her living expenses haven't cost you a single dime, and she hasn't affected your life in any way. You were born very weak too. The only reason you are so healthy today is that you were born into a privileged family that provides you with medical resources others can't even dream of. That just makes you incredibly lucky. It is not an excuse to mock others!"
Connor froze.
He never expected his mother to reprimand him so severely.
Deep down, he knew she was right.
The only reason he got to ride in luxury cars and attend an elite kindergarten was because he was the young master of the Quincy family.
He hadn't earned any of the Quincy family's wealth; he had just hit the genetic lottery.
But Connor still felt defensive.
All he really wanted was to throw a tantrum so his mom would pay more attention to him.
"Dad!" He looked at Killian, desperately seeking backup.
"Your mother is right," Killian stated indifferently.
When it came to raising his child, Killian didn't believe in blind coddling.
Jillian was taken aback. She had braced herself for Killian's wrath over scolding their son.
But it proved that Killian wasn't entirely morally bankrupt. He at least possessed a baseline sense of right and wrong.
