Connor hadn't expected his father to side against him.

He lowered his head in utter defeat.

Just then, Killian's phone rang. He answered it. It was Mr. Vaughn calling to apologize on behalf of his daughter, hoping Killian would be the bigger person and let the matter slide.

Although the Vaughns weren't as powerful as the Quincys, they were still a prominent family with significant standing in the city.

Mr. Vaughn was an elder, and unless the conflict was truly irreconcilable, Killian would naturally give him face.

"It was just a misunderstanding," Killian replied smoothly. "Since you're asking, Mr. Vaughn, I'll let it slide."

Jillian was thrilled for Mallory. She quietly peeked up at Killian.

To her surprise, while Killian sounded completely bored on the phone, his eyes were locked dead onto her.

As Jillian looked up, their eyes collided perfectly in the rearview mirror.

She immediately snapped her gaze away, flushed with the awkwardness of being caught sneaking a look.

Killian ended the call.

Jillian pulled out her phone and secretly texted Mallory the good news.

Once she hit send, she looked back at Killian and spoke earnestly. "Thank you. On behalf of Mallory and those kids."

Killian rested his elegant hand on the window frame. His long, defined fingers uncurled slightly, faint blue veins tracing beneath his cool, pale skin.

"You have no right to involve yourself in this matter."

Jillian lowered her eyes. Why did she set herself up for that?

In Killian's eyes, this was a petty squabble among rich heirs—him, Mallory, and Sylvia.

A common girl like Jillian, who had clawed her way up, had absolutely no right to speak on it.

But Jillian was genuinely happy for Mallory.

"Then I thank you on behalf of Stella."

Connor, who had just been scolded by his father, now felt completely validated seeing Killian take his side. It was as if he had instantly found a weapon to use against his mother.

"Exactly, Mom! You were so disrespectful. What if he gets mad and refuses to teach me properly?"

Connor fully expected his mother to panic and apologize for her actions.

Instead, Jillian replied blankly, "Then we'll get you another teacher."

Both Killian and Connor stared at her in sheer shock.

This was completely contrary to Jillian's usual behavior.

She had always been Connor's biggest advocate when it came to painting. She had even practically begged Killian to use his network to find a master painter to teach him.

Silas Xavier was widely celebrated and arguably the most sought-after artist in the city.

Having him as a teacher should have had Jillian over the moon.
