The only logical explanation was that the moment she found out Silas was Sylvia's stepfather, she projected all her bitter hostility onto him.

"Get the hell out of my car," Killian spat out of nowhere.

Jillian felt a crushing wave of humiliation. She didn't want to be degraded like this in front of her son.

But to her, Killian represented absolute, unshakable authority.

She obeyed him almost purely on instinct.

Jillian pushed the car door open and stepped out into the cold air.

"Take a long look at yourself and reflect on what it means to be a decent mother."

Killian's voice wasn't a shout, but it was loud enough.

Daniel's window was rolled down. Naturally, he heard every word.

Watching Jillian walk back to his car, Daniel didn't say a word. He simply got out and opened the passenger door for her to climb in.

He cast one dark look at Killian's car before Killian hit the gas and sped off into the night.

Sitting in Daniel's car, Jillian was drowning in the suffocating degradation of being kicked out by her own husband and son.

Fortunately, Daniel already knew exactly where she stood in the Quincy family.

There was no need for her to pretend in front of him.

"I'll take you home," Daniel said softly.

He started the engine and slowly steered the car out of the parking lot.

The silence in the cabin was suffocating.

Daniel didn't even know where to begin to comfort her.

If it had been any other man humiliating her like that, he would have dragged him out and made him pay for it.

But it was Killian. It was the man Jillian loved to her very core. Seeing her reduced to such a pathetic state, any outsider would just assume she brought it on herself.

Jillian leaned forward, resting her elbows on her knees as her hair fell forward, completely shielding her face.

She wasn't actually upset over Killian's attitude. He had never once respected her, and she had grown numb to his contempt a long time ago.

Jillian couldn't figure it out, and she was utterly terrified of finding out the answer.

Suddenly, a tiny hand wrapped around her arm. Jillian turned her head and saw Stella looking up at her with pure anxiety.

Was she worried about her?

Jillian realized more than ever that Stella wasn't broken; she just didn't speak. She didn't know how to express herself.

But her emotional intelligence was perfectly intact.

She could read the emotions of the people around her. She was deeply empathetic.

"I'm fine," Jillian said, gently holding Stella's hand.

Stella nodded and obediently scooted closer to Jillian on the seat.

She wanted to rest her little head against Jillian's arm to offer her comfort.

But after a second of hesitation, she stopped herself.

She was too afraid that Jillian wouldn't like it.
