Jillian nodded, making no effort to deny her aversion to Sylvia.
At that, Gibson found himself at a loss for words.
Her resistance was palpable, and continuing to press her would only be inappropriate.
Taking a half-step back, Gibson cleared the path for her. "I'm sorry to have bothered you."
Keeping her gaze lowered, Jillian brushed past him.
A breeze swept through, lifting the hair that rested against her shoulders like the flutter of butterfly wings.
Gibson instinctively glanced down, but Jillian walked away without so much as a second look, seemingly entirely unaffected by his presence.
She continued her slow circuit. Although she had no genuine appreciation for Silas's artwork, there was nothing else for her to do but blindly stare at the paintings one by one.
She hadn't gotten far when Natalie's sharp voice rang out from behind her. "Jillian, what are you doing here?"
Jillian turned around to see Natalie approaching, her arm linked with Sienna's.
"Why did you come? Is this the kind of place for someone like you? Do you even understand the art? What exactly are you pretending to be?"
Natalie had never bothered with pleasantries when it came to her.
Instead of reprimanding her daughter, Sienna echoed her disdain with a cold question, "Why are you here?"
Jillian lowered her eyes. "Killian told me to bring Connor."
Sienna and Natalie exchanged a look. They had seen Connor earlier and knew Killian was the one who sent him, but Silas hadn't mentioned that the boy's mother had personally dropped him off.
They had assumed one of the household staff brought him.
Interrupted, Natalie settled for shooting Jillian a contemptuous scoff.
"I'll be going now. I won't disturb you," Jillian said, offering Sienna a brief nod before walking away.
"Mom, look at her! She's getting more and more disrespectful to you. When is Killian finally going to throw her out on the street?"
Sienna gently scolded her. "I told you, your brother can't get a divorce right now. We'll deal with it when the time is right."
Natalie let out a heavy sigh, looking immensely disappointed.
Jillian had assumed she could head home after touring the exhibition, but a short while later, Sienna called her. She informed Jillian that they were going out to eat with Madeline's family and taking Connor with them.
After the dinner, Sienna and Natalie would return directly to the main estate, so Jillian was instructed to tag along, wait until they finished, and then take Connor back to The Yale Residences herself.
"As for the dinner itself, don't show your face. I imagine you'd feel out of place anyway," Sienna told her.
