He was playing the saint out here, but who knew if he'd ever actually warn his sister behind closed doors to stop destroying someone else's marriage.

Probably not. He seemed more than happy to support Sylvia and Killian being together.

So, what use was his fleeting kindness now?

"I don't need anything. Thanks."

Gibson wanted to keep trying, but Jillian cut him off. "Please go back inside, Mr. Xavier. I'm perfectly fine. Don't trouble yourself."

Her rejection was painfully clear. Unable to push the issue, Gibson simply opened the door and stepped back into the private room.

"Who were you talking to out there?" Sylvia asked the second he sat down.

"No one. Just a phone call," Gibson deflected.

Finally, the dinner wrapped up at 10 PM. Connor was usually fast asleep by this time, but the thrill of eating with his beloved Sylvia and her family had given him a second wind, keeping him wide awake.

The group exited the private room and descended to the lobby.

As they prepared to part ways, they held hands and exchanged warm pleasantries.

"Natalie, whenever you have the time, you and your mother should come over for dinner. I'll cook something special for you myself," Madeline offered affectionately.

Natalie replied with a coquettish lilt, "Really? But Gibson is so busy with work. Won't we be bothering you?"

Gibson's expression remained entirely neutral. "I'm rarely home anyway."

Sienna turned to Madeline. "You should come over for tea more often, too. The old matriarch's health isn't what it used to be, so she rarely comes downstairs these days."

Madeline felt a surge of joy. Eleanor Quincy deeply disliked her, meaning she rarely had the chance to interact with the elite Quincy family.

Jillian stood far away in the corner of the lobby, waiting for their endless goodbyes to conclude so she could finally take Connor home.

"Jillian," Daniel Langley said, gently tapping her shoulder.

Jillian spun around.

Daniel grinned. "It is you. I thought that silhouette looked familiar."

"Daniel? What are you doing here?" Jillian asked.

It had been over two decades since her divorce, meaning the power and prestige of Gibson's paternal family had absolutely nothing to do with her.

Even her wealth was largely just alimony and assets extracted from her ex-husband.

As for her own maiden family, they weren't even on the same playing field as the Quincys or the Langleys.

Daniel had every right to treat her like a ghost.

Madeline's expression soured completely. Beside her, Sylvia hooked her arm through her mother's, her grip tightening subconsciously.

"Daniel," Sylvia murmured, biting her lip as she offered a delicate greeting.

Daniel completely ignored her. Instead, he reached out and shook Gibson's hand.

"I have matters to attend to. I'll leave you all to it."

With that, Daniel turned on his heel and walked right back to Jillian.

"Come here. Let me introduce you to some friends," Daniel said.
