**Dreams Rise Again by Braxton 102**
**Chapter 102**
In an instant, Shadow transformed the moment into a theatrical spectacle. He let out a howl that was both exaggerated and dramatic, his entire body quivering in a comical display of fear. With a sudden burst of energy, he dashed a few steps away, only to dramatically collapse onto his back, all four paws flailing in the air as if he were playing the part of a lifeless creature.
“Spare me! Please, don’t eat me!” Shadow whimpered, his voice dripping with mock terror. “Your roar is absolutely terrifying! I’m so frightened my legs have turned to jelly!”
Nina, witnessing this hilarious performance, couldn’t help but stifle a laugh. She quickly composed herself, adopting a serious demeanor as she turned to Fatty. “Look at that! Even the so-called ‘purebred wolf king’ from across the ocean is quaking in his fur at the sound of your roar!”
“Your roar is so powerful, it’s not just scaring off international guests; it’s scaring off international wolves too!” she exclaimed, her enthusiasm bubbling over as she waved her arms animatedly.
“Just imagine! Once you bulk up a bit more and build some real lung power, your roar will resonate across all Five Continents, sending shivers through the Four Seas!”
Nina’s excitement was infectious, and she continued, “Before you know it, you’ll be the tiger who conquers the entire world! So how can you possibly lose confidence now?”
Quentin, who was busy tending to the ferret’s wounds, couldn’t suppress a grin at Nina’s spirited encouragement. Her passion was contagious, and he admired how she could lift Fatty’s spirits so effortlessly.
In that moment, Fatty’s eyes sparkled with newfound confidence. He released his hold on Nina, puffed out his chest, and stood tall, radiating a sudden burst of energy and pride.
With an air of theatrical importance, he cast a self-important glance at Shadow and declared, “You may rise! I grant you mercy!”
Shadow eagerly played along, springing back to his feet and wagging his tail as if he had truly been awed by Fatty’s grand display of majesty.
Seeing the two hefty creatures finally getting along brought a wave of relief to Nina. She quietly approached Quentin and whispered, “How’s it looking? Is the ferret badly hurt?”
Without looking up from his task, Quentin replied, “The little guy’s right hind leg got scratched by something sharp, but the bleeding has already stopped.”
“You might want to give him a shot to disinfect the wound and check for any other injuries,” he suggested in a low voice, his focus unwavering.
The ferret was a striking snowy white from head to tail, save for a single black streak at the tip of its tail—just like what people referred to as an “Ermine.”
Nina quickly grabbed the medical kit and knelt down to examine the little creature. Surprisingly, the ferret didn’t even flinch; its beady black eyes gazed up at her with calmness and trust.
Once Nina confirmed that everything was alright, she let out a sigh of relief and gently patted its head. “Sweetheart, does anything else hurt? Are you hungry at all?” she asked softly.
The ferret bobbed its head vigorously, making sure Nina knew just how hungry it was.
Twenty minutes drifted by. As the soft hues of dusk enveloped the campsite, Quentin and Shadow returned, diligently setting up the tent under the muted glow of the moonlight.
Tonight, Shadow was unusually cooperative—he picked up a tent pole in his mouth and passed it over to Quentin, or pressed a corner into place with his paws, all the while making little whimpering noises as if he were truly on a mission.
Nearby, Nina was squatting down, offering her homemade fish-and-rice meal to the little ferret with tender care.
The little critter instantly buried its face in the bowl, devouring the food as if it hadn’t eaten in days.
Watching the little one feast, Nina chuckled softly. “Easy there, little buddy—where did you come from? Does anyone take care of you?”
The ferret paused its munching and sniffled, “My name’s Pearlie. I used to live in a big house. My owner had a whole bunch of animals, but he said I was too hyper and always stuck to him, so he just dumped me.”
Nina’s heart sank at the revelation—he had been abandoned after all.
“I’ve been wandering on my own for the past few days, asking around wherever I could. Someone told me there’s an animal park here, and the owner is really nice, so I wanted to come and give it a try.”
The little ferret curled into a ball in Nina’s arms, his voice small but full of hope. “But when I was tunneling through, I got my leg cut by some iron bars. I was just too hungry and spotted a mouse, so I ran after it.”
“Who would’ve thought I’d end up stumbling right into the big tiger’s territory? It scared me half to death,” he added, his eyes wide with the memory.
Nina gently stroked his head, her voice soothing. “It’s okay, Pearlie. From now on, this will be your new home!”
The little ferret looked up at her, rice grains adorning his whiskers. “Really?”
“Absolutely,” Nina replied, her smile radiant. “This place is huge, and there are plenty of other animal friends here. Take your time—soon you’ll know everyone and have lots of great buddies.”
Pearlie’s eyes sparkled with excitement. Once his belly was full, he became adorably clingy, rubbing his soft fur against Nina’s wrist and purring with sheer contentment.
“They’ve already offered a million dollars, but the owner remains unyielding—still won’t allow them to tear the place down. Director Chambers is truly at his wit’s end over this.”
“That plot is in a crucial location. If they could run the road straight through there, it would save a tremendous amount of trouble for the construction,” Gordon explained, his brow furrowed with concern.
“I guess once this situation gets sorted out, Director Chambers will finally have time to sit down with me about the animal staffing project,” he concluded.
Nina’s eyes lit up as a clever idea sparked in her mind. “Regarding that difficult resident who won’t budge, is there any way I could lend a hand?”
Gordon grinned, a glint of mischief in his eyes. “What, are you thinking of unleashing your animal demolition squad? We might need some dinosaurs for that!”
Nina chuckled but kept her tone earnest. “If we use this opportunity to showcase just how incredible our animals are, perhaps the entire project would progress much faster.”
After a moment’s thought, she added, “Mr. Vale, maybe we could send the animals to snoop around and discover what that family truly wants and how much compensation they’re holding out for.”
“And if they’re asking for something completely outrageous, we could alert Director Chambers to start working on a backup plan,” Nina suggested, her mind racing with possibilities.
Gordon nodded, visibly impressed. “Great thinking! Let me dig into the details and see what’s happening over there.”
Alex’s words had their sharpness, but truth be told, he wasn’t entirely off base.
The animal staffing project encompassed far more than just law enforcement—it couldn’t rely solely on the police for everything, and it certainly wasn’t fair to leave Gordon to shoulder all the legwork alone.
If the folks in agriculture, forestry, and other departments could witness firsthand what these furry little creatures were capable of, they would realize that they were much more than mere crime-fighting assistants; they could tackle a variety of unexpected tasks as well—
perhaps then, the entire project would gain momentum much sooner.
Nina was resolute in her determination to get her fur babies onto the government payroll as swiftly as possible. That way, even if one day she could no longer communicate with her little ones, or if her body were to fail her before the end,
they would still be lovingly cared for, never wandering or suffering again, and allowed to live safe, happy lives.
Before long, Nina had secured the address of the stubborn holdout.
