**TITLE: Dreams Rise Again by Braxton**
**Chapter 106**
Director Chambers spotted Nina from a distance, her eyes swollen and red, a clear sign of distress. A frown creased his brow as he pondered, “What could a young woman like her possibly do to warrant this? Wait a moment, are you all giving her a hard time?”
Finn’s voice shot up an octave, filled with indignation. “I would never dare lie to you! Seriously, she’s just here to stir up trouble. Who in their right mind brings a pet to a job?”
“I was merely trying to be helpful,” Nina interjected, her voice trembling slightly. “I wanted to teach her how to interact with the residents and what details to focus on.” Finn thrust his hospital bill and diagnosis report right into Director Chambers’s face, as if presenting evidence in a court of law. “Just look at what she did!”
“She thought I was being annoying, so she let that ferret she brought spray me with pee! Now, look at me—I had to go to the hospital because of it!”
At that moment, Finn’s crew gathered around him, eager to support his claims. “Director Chambers, we can back him up! This newbie’s been here all day and hasn’t even knocked on a single resident’s door!” one of them exclaimed, his tone dripping with mockery.
“She brought a cat with her and then lost it! She wasted the entire afternoon searching for that cat!” another chimed in, laughter bubbling beneath the surface.
“Yeah, she even insisted we help her look for it! Isn’t that delaying all the real work?” Finn added, unable to resist the opportunity to pile on.
With a dramatic flair, Finn put on his most tormented expression, his voice dripping with faux concern. “Director Chambers, I’m just saying, putting someone so clueless on the job is completely throwing off our schedule!”
Director Chambers regarded Finn and his crew with a skeptical gaze. *Could this young woman, handpicked by Gordon, really be the type to cause this much chaos?* He remembered the whispers that she had a unique ability to communicate with animals. *If her cat was truly lost, shouldn’t she have found it by now?*
As he scanned the demolition site, he noted the abundance of stray cats wandering around. *Perhaps she’s just using this as an excuse to scout the area,* he mused.
Director Chambers paused, allowing the tension to thicken in the air before he approached Nina. He pulled her aside, lowering his voice to a conspiratorial whisper. “Nina, have you been able to pick up on what the residents are really thinking? Do you have any sense of what might persuade them to agree?”
Nina shook her head slowly, her expression clouded with uncertainty.
“Alright, let’s try this again,” he pressed gently. “Have you had even a brief conversation with them? Just a few words?”
Once again, Nina shook her head, her eyes downcast.
Director Chambers wasn’t ready to give up. “Come on, you must have some idea why they’re resistant. Is it about the compensation being too low, or is there something else they want?”
Nina merely shook her head again, her silence weighing heavily in the air.
“Okay, at the very least, you know how many people live there, right? Are there any elderly residents or children in the families? Surely, you’ve picked up on the basics?”
As Nina continued to shake her head, Director Chambers felt the flicker of hope in his heart dimming into disappointment.
Finn and his crew, sensing the shift in the atmosphere, couldn’t help but revel in the moment. “See, Director Chambers? She’s just messing around!” one of them jeered.
“Just fire her already! Keeping her here is only holding up the whole project!” another chimed in, their voices laced with glee.
Finn snorted, laughter bubbling forth uncontrollably. “Seriously, Nina, are you for real? You think you’re some kind of legend or supernatural being?”
Just then, the road behind Nina was flooded with blinding headlights, and the sharp wail of police sirens shattered the evening calm.
Everyone froze, eyes wide in shock, as five or six police cars screeched to a halt in perfect formation behind her. The red and blue lights danced around her slender figure, casting an aura of authority that made her appear almost untouchable.
Director Chambers was so stunned that his glasses nearly slipped off his nose. “W-What are the police doing here? What’s going on?”
Finn and his crew stood speechless, mouths agape as they stammered, “Come on, is this for real? Just for a missing cat, you call in this many cops?”
In the next instant, the door of the lead police car swung open with purpose. Simon stepped out from the driver’s seat, looking sharp and all business.
His thick eyebrows were sharp as blades, and his almond-shaped eyes scanned the crowd with the fierce intensity of a hawk on the hunt, each gaze chillingly precise.
But what truly caught everyone’s attention was his left hand gripping a leash—attached to a muscular, glossy-furred Shepherd police dog.
The dog’s eyes gleamed like searchlights, ears perked up, its entire body coiled with tension, ready to spring into action at a moment’s notice.
Together, Simon and the police dog commanded immediate silence from the restless crowd; their presence alone was enough to put everyone in check.
