**Chapter 105**
Nina clutched Pearlie tightly in her arms, her heart racing as she distanced herself from the holdout’s house. The air was thick with tension, and she quickly sought out a secluded spot, her mind racing with the implications of what she had just discovered. Without wasting a moment, she dialed Simon’s number, her voice trembling with urgency as she spoke.
“Simon, something’s really wrong!” she exclaimed, her words tumbling out in a rush. “I’ve been working as a demolition negotiator, and guess what—I just stumbled upon some bodies!” The gravity of her discovery weighed heavily on her, and she filled Simon in on the details, her voice a mix of fear and disbelief.
Simon’s demeanor shifted immediately, seriousness etched across his face. “Alright, Nina, don’t mention this to anyone else. I’m notifying Captain Cole right now, and we’ll get the police dispatched over there!”
A sudden thought struck Nina, and she felt a chill run down her spine. “Simon, if there are bodies in the wall, do we still need the owner’s permission to demolish the house?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Simon chuckled lightly, though his tone remained grave. “Not a chance. We found bodies embedded in the cement wall—multiple ones. This just became a major criminal investigation. The police will need to take down that wall to conduct their inquiry.”
He continued to explain, his voice steady and reassuring, “When it comes to criminal matters, ownership rights and compensation take a back seat. The police have the upper hand in all of this.”
Nina’s heart was a tempest of emotions; fear was now mingling with an exhilarating thrill. “So, the holdout’s place is actually going to be demolished?” she asked, her excitement bubbling to the surface.
Simon nodded, his expression firm. “Absolutely. As soon as the officers arrive today and examine that cement wall, if they find anything, they’ll start tearing it down tonight—working around the clock to get it done,” he assured her.
Nina could hardly contain her astonishment. “Wow, that’s incredibly fast!”
Lowering his voice to a near whisper, Simon’s tone turned somber. “That holdout—the one who refused to let anyone touch his house, no matter the offer? He’s now our prime murder suspect.”
“Nina, I need you to do something for me. I’m putting you in charge of keeping a close eye on the owner, but make sure you don’t raise any alarms. Stay sharp and stay put; I’m on my way right now,” Simon instructed, his voice filled with urgency.
Nina’s expression transformed into one of determination. “You can count on me!” After hanging up, she buried her face in Pearlie’s soft, fluffy back, inhaling deeply to calm her racing thoughts. “Pearlie, you’re truly my lucky charm.”
Pearlie tilted her head, her beady eyes wide with confusion. “Does finding bodies in a cement wall really count as good luck? Humans have the strangest definitions of fortune,” she remarked, her tone laced with skepticism.
Nina chuckled softly, her lips curling into a wry smile. “Not exactly,” she admitted, her mind racing with the implications of the situation. She was really referring to the swift pace of the demolition. “This is the kind of luck I could do without,” she added, a hint of irony in her voice.
Deep down, what Nina truly desired was to prevent loss of life altogether—if only she could have intervened before it was too late.
She gently stroked Pearlie’s soft belly, her voice a quiet whisper. “Thanks to you, the souls trapped within that cement will finally see the light of day again.”
Her fingertip brushed against Pearlie’s chilly little nose. “You helped unlock their silent tombs. Now the truth can come to light for everyone to see. That’s what’s truly remarkable.”
“So don’t be afraid of those bodies. It’s not the deceased that should instill fear—it’s the wicked individuals orchestrating all of this that are truly terrifying.”
Pearlie cocked her furry little head, letting out a soft “mrrp” sound, still somewhat baffled, but she wrapped her tail gently around Nina’s wrist. “Don’t worry, Ms. Summer. I’ve got your back. If any bad guys show up, I’ll zap ‘em!”
Nina felt a wave of warmth wash over her as she reached out to ruffle Pearlie’s round, fluffy head. With Simon’s instructions echoing in her mind, she began to think of ways to remain inconspicuous while keeping a close watch.
Then it hit her—she had already sent Tabby Cat on a reconnaissance mission back at the parking lot. None of the demolition crew hanging around the holdout’s property had ever seen Tabby Cat before. A clever idea sparked in her mind.
Holding Pearlie close, Nina adopted an expression of anxious urgency and began calling out, “Tabby King, where are you?” She moved around the area, her voice laced with genuine worry as she searched for her elusive feline.
“Tabby King, stop playing hide and seek! Come on, let’s go home!” she called out, her tone fraught with urgency.
“Ugh, these guys are really making this difficult! I can’t even get a word in with the owner. Seriously, how are we supposed to get this place demolished like this?” she lamented, her frustration evident.
Meanwhile, Finn’s crew had gathered in front of the holdout’s house, their laughter ringing out as they noticed Nina’s predicament. They reveled in her misfortune, gloating over her apparent misstep.
