Chapter 119
Alex’s assistant immediately took the bracelet to the onlookers for identification.
Alex took out his phone and dialed a number.
“Hello, Mr. Hastings, are you busy now?” he asked politely.
“Could you help me check if an elderly man named Leonard Lee has ever bought insurance from your company?” he continued.
A thoughtful look flickered in Alex’s eyes at the words from the phone.
Soon, his assistant came back with the bracelet. “Professor Summer, I found out this bracelet belongs to Ian Lee, the grandson of Leonard Lee.”
Alex put the bracelet under a magnifying glass, scrutinizing every detail. “Look at the bead holes. They have traces of violent pulling.”
Putting his findings together with the earlier phone call, Alex instantly figured out the truth.
He glanced over at Nina and Simon, who were still crouched on the mudflats, a mix of glee and disdain flickering in his eyes.
Suddenly, a harsh motorcycle roar shattered the quiet along the riverside road.
A red-haired teen slammed his motorcycle to a halt, leaping off almost before it had stopped moving.
He staggered toward the police cordon, his red-rimmed eyes locked desperately onto the body lying on the muddy shore.
“Grandpa!” Ian wailed, his anguished cry echoing across the riverbank.
After the investigation wrapped up, Leonard’s body was gently set onto a stretcher, shrouded in a plain white sheet that. rustled in the breeze coming off the river.
Beneath that sheet, the thin, frail outline of the old man was just visible. The corners of his clothes, soaked by the river, turned almost see-through.
Ian fixed on the body draped in the white sheet. With a heavy thud, he collapsed to the ground, clutching the police cordon in a death grip until his knuckles turned ghostly pale.
“I’m sorry…” Ian sobbed, choking on each word so much it was barely more than a whisper. Tears and snot smeared across his face. Trembling all over, he finally choked out, “I shouldn’t have argued with you.”
Just as he was sobbing uncontrollably, struggling to catch his breath, a pair of gleaming leather shoes stopped right in front of him.
Alex towered over him, voice ice-cold. “Ian Lee, you’re the prime suspect in the murder of Leonard Lee. Get up. You’re coming with us.”
He nodded to the two cops standing behind him, signaling them forward.
Nina and Simon both looked shocked.
‘Did he really find evidence just now?’ Nina thought to herself, sneaking a glance at Alex.
Meanwhile, Simon frowned, staring at the patch of mud left behind after the body was moved.
At that moment, Ian jerked his head up, his bloodshot eyes full of shock and disbelief. “Me? I killed Grandpa?”
