Chapter 123 Why Is There One More?

Chapter 123 Why Is There One More?

Liam whispered into the phone, “Quentin, some dumb streamer tried to make trouble for Ms. Summer today. He almost trashed the infirmary.”

Quentin’s voice instantly turned cold. “Is Nina hurt?”

“No, no, no! Situation’s under control!” Liam said, bragging a little. “But seriously, Quentin, you missed the fun. If I hadn’t been quick on my feet…”

Quentin’s voice came through the phone, icy. “Since when do I need you to give me a special report about her?” Liam immediately replied with a grin, “Hey, Quentin, you’re the one who asked me to keep an eye on the zoo, remember?

“I just do my job, keeping you updated!”

Quentin replied, voice cool and detached. “I asked you to keep an eye on the zoo, not to spy on Nina.”

He hesitated, a trace of awkwardness barely audible. “But she’s Shadow’s doctor. If something happens to her, it’s a problem.”

Liam’s eyes sparkled, instantly latching onto the opening. “Sure, all for Shadow! Hey, since I saved the day, shouldn’t there be a little bonus in it for me?

“Come on, Quentin, my cash stash is running dry!

“My parents cut me off four years ago because I decided to become a vet.”

Quentin scoffed, voice dripping with disdain. “You’re a full-grown adult and you still have the nerve to ask for an allowance?”

Liam instantly put on his most pitiful act, voice quivering in mock desperation. “Quentin, if you don’t bail me out, I’ll have no choice but to go beg Ms. Summer for another salary advance.

“She already knows I’m broke from just graduating. She actually bumped up my pay just last month.” Before Liam could finish, Quentin hung up on him, totally ruthless.

A few seconds later, a message lit up on Liam’s phone. 200 thousand dollars dropped straight into his account. He couldn’t help but break into a huge, satisfied grin.

“Holy crap. That’s a lot!” he yelled.

But then Quentin sent another text: [150 thousand dollars for the zoo animals and 30 thousand dollars for your food.]

Liam stared at those numbers, feeling personally attacked. “Quentin, am I even your nephew anymore?!” he murmured.

Although Liam kept grumbling, he was totally on task, making sure not to miss a single thing on Sean’s livestream.

He’d first noticed Sean back when he was tossing snacks to the fluffy little red pandas, and had been discreetly monitoring him ever since.

Since Sean tried anything shady with Nina or the zoo, he needed to pay for it. Liam wouldn’t let him run away.

Quentin was Liam’s uncle.

Quentin’s two half-brothers were sneaky and rotten to the core.

Thankfully, not everyone in the Hayes family was a piece of work. Quentin’s cousin was the absolute best. He really had Quentin’s back all through school.

And Liam was that kind-hearted cousin’s son. Technically, Liam had to call Quentin uncle, but in reality, they were only five years apart.

The Hayes Group was basically a medical empire, and everyone in the family was a doctor in some specialty. Even at family dinners, all they ever talked about was the latest medical mysteries.

But Liam was the black sheep. He flat-out rebelled, ditched the family’s medical legacy, and went straight into veterinary medicine. Quentin was so mad about it.

What really blew Liam’s mind was that Quentin, famous for his OCD and hatred of anything with fur, had quietly moved into Forest Isle Zoo without so much as a peep.

When Liam saw Quentin bottle-feeding a snow leopard cub, he honestly thought Quentin had been possessed by some kind of animal-loving spirit.

Liam rubbed his chin, thinking, ‘Is there some kind of cosmic contract binding the Hayes family to the zoo or what?’

After hustling Quentin out of some pocket money, Liam didn’t waste a second.

He immediately threw an arm around the hapless Sean and jumped right back into hustling zoo merch, set on earning even more cash.

Inside the infirmary.

The operation was a complete success.

The procedure went smoothly, and now Orange was lying on its side in the incubator after waking up from anesthesia.

Its breathing was steady, with its belly gently rising and falling with each breath.

Though Orange was still a little weak from the surgery, those shiny black eyes already sparkled with life again. She would stick out a tiny pink tongue and give her nose a little lick.

Nina leaned over the incubator, her gloved fingers gently stroking the soft fur behind Orange’s ear.

Her eyes sparkled, her heart melting. “You’re just too cute, Orange.”

Just thinking about how this precious little life was one of her zoo’s treasures made Nina’s heart swell with pride.

She couldn’t help but smile, feeling a deep sense of accomplishment.

Just then, there was a gentle knock at the infirmary door.

A few zookeepers filed in, each carrying a small animal that needed a follow-up checkup.

There were macaques, Little Alpaca, and a whole crowd of fluffy patients, twelve little ones in total, all waiting their turn.

Nina quickly got up, grabbed the animal medical logs she’d been painstakingly keeping, and handed them to the experts. “Mr. Lewis, Mr. Quinn, here are all their recent health updates and treatment notes.”

The experts took the files and started flipping through them.

Her handwriting was super tidy, and every little detail was crystal clear. They include weight changes, eating habits, medicine logs, and even their quirks and behaviors.

She’d even added colorful tags for each section, making everything easy to sort through.

Ronan grinned, nodding. “Ms. Summer, these files put most of our grad students to shame!”

Loomis added with a laugh, “No wonder all the animals here look so healthy. You really go above and beyond.” Jevon kept flipping through the data, totally impressed. “With records this detailed, it makes follow-up checks and recovery a breeze.”

Nina’s cheeks turned pink, feeling a bit flustered by the compliments. She waved it off, mumbling, “No big deal. That’s just what I need to do.”

For the next stretch, the infirmary was practically buzzing like a top-tier animal clinic. All twelve fluffy patients lined up to get their checkups, one by one.

It was nonstop laughs. The place was full of little mishaps and funny moments from start to finish.

The highlight had to be that naughty macaque. Halfway through his exam, he suddenly reached out and gave Loomis’s shiny bald head a curious little pat, then chattered away with a couple of cheeky “ee-ee” noises.

Monkeys were born troublemakers, always poking around where they shouldn’t.

Right then, the little macaque blinked in confusion. “Ms. Summer, how come this bird’s nest is so smooth and bald?”
