She’d long since learned that in jobs like medicine or law enforcement, there was always some outsider who thought they knew better than the experts.
Getting into arguments with those types wasn’t worth it at all.
Back in her college days, Nina would get hauled over to Summer Veterinary Group. They never cut her any slack, but it sure gave her a crash course in handling all sorts of pushy pet owners.
After all these years, she’d built up an immunity to that kind of nonsense.
Nina understood one thing perfectly. When people questioned her for no reason, she never bothered trying to prove herself.
She borrowed two phones from the cops. One to stay in touch with Simon, the other to call Mr. Crow’s child’s smartwatch.
“Simon, how’s it going on your end? Can you catch up?” Nina pressed, her voice tight with worry.
“The cops are already on the scene here, and the victim’s been taken to the hospital,” Simon replied.
Just then, Simon’s voice came through, quick and breathless. “I’ve parked on a street near the suspect and I’m heading into the alley now!”
Just as Nina was talking to Simon on the phone, the old man nearby got that “I knew it” look on his face and started yelling, “See? I told you. They’re all insiders just as I thought!
“The sister’s got herself a government gig, and the brother’s on the payroll too. This family sure knows how to work the system!
“What’s next? Your dog joining the force as a police dog?”
The harsh words made the cops nearby frown.
But when they turned to look at Nina, they saw that despite her youth, not a hint of emotion crossed her face. She was laser-focused, barely moving, every ounce of her attention locked on the call with Simon.
Her almost unshakable composure made the officers exchange glances. The officers thought she really knew how to keep her cool.
Thinking about it, it made sense. For someone so young to receive praise from the police, Nina must actually have some serious skills.
Just then, Simon’s voice came through the receiver, tense and deep, wind screaming in the background. “Nina, I’m closing in and getting ready to intercept!”
Nina gripped her phone tight, listening as the frantic wind rushed through from the other side.

Just then, Mr. Crow’s voice came cawing through another phone. “Ms. Summer, Chubby says the suspect’s got something hidden in the lower left side of his jacket!”
Chubby burst out eagerly, “Nina! I scanned the guy’s jacket with my echolocation!
“There’s something tucked away in the lower left part. It’s pointy and thin, nothing like the soft stuff or bones next to it!”
Bats were like living radars. They could see shapes using nothing but sound echoes.
Nina’s heart skipped a beat as she listened to Chubby’s description.
Pointy and thin? Nina’s mind spun, alarm bells ringing in her head.
It was a knife hidden on the lower left side of his jacket!
Nina didn’t hesitate. She shot the info straight to Simon. “Simon, listen! The guy’s got a knife stashed in the lower left part of his jacket. Be careful and don’t let him get too close!”

Deep in the shadows of the old alley, Simon was racing through at full speed.
His eyes were glued to his phone, following the real-time routes relayed by Mr. Crow and Chubby. Nina’s urgent warnings echoed in his ears, but he just shot back a quick, “Got it!”
Before the word was even out, he kicked into high gear, leaping over a stack of discarded wooden crates and landing almost silently.
Then he ducked under a low-hanging clothesline, never missing a beat, and used the bricks jutting out from the corner to vault over a short wall.
His figure moved through the shadows, swift and steady, like a silent wind slicing through the maze of old buildings and narrow alleys.
Simon cut in quietly, his voice steady and calm like nothing could shake him. “Don’t worry!”
Meanwhile, the guy in the gray hoodie was gasping for air as he ran. He was totally worn out. His legs wobbled with every clumsy, desperate step, like he could collapse at any second.
He hadn’t the slightest clue that he was actually being stalked from the skies by a plump little bat on aerial surveillance duty.
Chubby fluttered his wings, looking like a soft, fluffy ball as he darted nimbly through the cramped alleyways.
Don’t underestimate his pudgy, round build. Once he took to the air, he was all skill. Twisting his body to dodge clotheslines and tucking his head to weave through random junk, he tailed his target like a pro, a silent little flying furball on a mission.

As he flew, Chubby, who’d always been a bit insecure, suddenly started feeling pretty pleased with himself. “Wait a sec, this human isn’t even as fast as me!”
With every flap, he got more hyped up, sticking right on the guy Nina told him to follow, his heart practically floating with happiness and pride.
“It turns out that I’m not some slow, pudgy little bat. I’m a super agile bat hero!” said he.
This whole chase didn’t tire Chubby out one bit. Instead, it made him realize just how much fun flying could be and gave him a huge boost of confidence!
Meanwhile, high above, Mr. Crow spread his wings like black satin and circled calmly over the entire alley district.
His bird’s-eye view was like a living, breathing map. Every twist and turn of the alleys, every discarded trash can, and every clothesline, all downloaded straight into his mind.
Crows were basically born with built-in binoculars. From 150 feet up, they could spot a burger wrapper or a takeout bag on the ground without even blinking.
Suddenly, Mr. Crow’s sharp eyes caught sight of a key detail.
“Nina, tell Simon. At the third intersection up ahead and turn right. It’s a dead-end alley!
“The suspect is heading straight for it! Simon can swing in from the left and trap him!”
“Got it!” Nina replied.
Without missing a beat, Nina passed along Mr. Crow’s crucial intel to Simon, crisp and clear.
Simon’s voice came back steady and low, “Copy that!”
Just then, the distant sounds of sirens, maybe police or maybe an ambulance, started echoing through the air, growing louder by the second.
As the noise crept closer, the suspect, who’d been limping and barely dragging himself forward, was jolted like a spooked animal and suddenly kicked into high gear, sprinting off in a panicked burst.
Just as he rushed past the third intersection, about to turn into the dead-end alley, a dark figure shot out from the other side, lightning fast!
Simon lunged, leaping into the air and landing a fierce flying kick to the attacker’s chest.
The thug grunted, sent uncontrollably deeper into the alley by the blow.
