Nina nodded firmly, locking eyes with Chunky. “Chunky, I have no one else to rely on but you now!

“This whole place is a maze of old alleyways, full of dead ends and obstacles, but for you, it’s your home court.

“Here, you can move circles around Mr. Crow.”

If it were up in the open sky, Mr. Crow would totally outrun Chunky with those powerful wings.

But in these cramped alleys, with low rooftops, tangled clotheslines, and heaps of random junk, this was where Chunky ruled the place.

Bats could fly up to 24 miles an hour and keep going way longer than any human could ever dream. If Chunky pursued relentlessly, criminals would never escape.

With echolocation, Chunky twisted and turned through narrow gaps, darting and dodging like a ghost in the night, never even grazing the clutter.

Seriously, that was basically how airplane radar was invented.

Mr. Crow, always the proud one, awkwardly mumbled to encourage Chunky, his words a little stiff. “Chunky’s better at a place like this than I am.”

Chunky puffed out his round, little chest at that.

Although he was still a bit nervous, he didn’t hesitate for a second. With a sharp whoosh, he shot straight for the kitchen window and vanished into the shadowy night.

Nina shot a quick look at her team, and in a flash, they had their plan set. Then she raised her hand and knocked on the door.

Emily said the landlady was called Leslie. Nina knocked hard and called out urgently, “Leslie, we’re from the community clinic, just here to check on your health!”

Emily chimed in immediately, her voice gentle but anxious. “Leslie, it’s Emily! I brought the doctor with me. Are you alright? Can you open the door?”

Sophia called out loud enough for everyone inside, and the whole block, to hear, “Hang in there! The ambulance is already on the way. It’ll be here any minute!”

After a brief moment of silence, a burst of sharp squeaks suddenly cut through the night air.

The sound rippled out, from close by to far away, as Chunky used his bat calls to send a message. “Nina! Mr. Crow! The bad guy just jumped out of the kitchen window and made a run for it!

“I’m already on him!”

Chunky’s squeaks echoed far through the labyrinth of twisting alleys.

Chunky’s squeaks quickly receded. He was clearly giving it everything he had, tearing after the bad guy.

A split second later, Mr. Crow darted into the shadows like a fired arrow, tearing off after Chunky.

The bad guy was finally gone!

Nina and others burst through the door at the same time, rushing inside.

Leslie was sprawled on the floor, her face ghostly pale, her breathing so faint.

Time snapped taut, urgency thick in the air.

Emily dove straight to the drawer she knew by heart, trying to grab emergency meds. She moved so fast that she sent a bunch of clutter flying off the table.

Nina dropped to her knees at Leslie’s side, checked her pulse, and cleared her airway. Her first aid training kicked in, and she jumped into action, steady as a rock.

Meanwhile, Sophia spun and shouted out the door with all she had, “Thief! Somebody’s stealing! Help! Help!”

The shouts ripped straight through the silence of the night.

Windows lit up one after another, like dominoes falling.

Footsteps hurried through the halls and voices called out, beams of flashlights slicing the darkness from all directions.

That old, suffocatingly quiet building suddenly got jolted wide awake by all the yelling.

Light pushed back the darkness, and the crowd’s voices smothered every trace of fear.

The night was no longer the bad guy’s cover. Now the whole neighborhood was alive with shouting and flashing lights.

And soon enough, the ambulance rolled up to the scene.

After Emily gave Leslie the emergency meds, some color returned to her face, and her breathing started to steady up.

Even though the crisis was under control for now, Emily stuck close to the stretcher and rode along with Leslie in the ambulance, with Sophia following to make sure everything was alright.

Nina stayed at the scene and quickly pulled out her phone, tapping open the location app. The real-time dot from Mr. Crow’s smartwatch was flashing steadily on the map.

She wasted no time and called Simon right away.

She said, “Simon, the perp just bolted!

“The animal detectives are hot on his trail and tracking him live, I’m sharing the route with you now. Let’s see if you can head him off!”

Simon didn’t miss a beat. “On it!”

As soon as the call ended, Nina quickly shared her screen, sending the live tracking map straight to Simon’s phone.

Just then, neighbors started piling up the stairs, waving their flashlights all over the place as they came closer.

“Oh man, is something going on at Leslie’s place?”

“Oh my god… They’re already loading her into the ambulance. I don’t think she’s gonna make it.”

“I heard the perp stabbed her three or four times! She’s so old. How could she possibly survive something like that?”

“No way, really? That’s terrifying.”

Nina stood there, phone in hand, completely dumbfounded. She didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.

She thought, ‘Didn’t Leslie just pass out from a heart attack? How did it already turn into she was stabbed three or four times?’

She glanced at the crowd gathering, all the lights and faces closing in, and let out a quiet sigh.

Rumors spread faster than Chunky chasing down the bad guy.

Nina called out loud enough for the whole crowd to hear, “Guys, let’s not get carried away with wild stories. Don’t buy into rumors, and definitely don’t spread them!

“Leslie wasn’t stabbed by anyone. She just had a heart attack. She’s already on her way to the hospital and getting help!”

An old man frowned, skepticism written all over his face. “Hey, young lady, who even are you? Why should we believe what you’re saying?”

Nina kept her cool and said, “I’m an official consultant brought in by the police, and I’m here to help crack the recent break-in case.”

The old man snorted, putting his hands behind his back. “Ha! The crook’s long gone, and you’re just standing here, not even lifting a finger?

“So you’re one of those consultants who just talk big and never actually do anything?

“Listen, kid, how much did you pay for that fancy badge anyway? I have dinner with the top brass from the city bureau all the time and never heard of you once.”

As soon as the old man finished, the crowd instantly broke out into a noisy discussion.

Someone cut in, “That’s right! There was another break-in just last week at an old neighborhood only a couple

of blocks from here!
