When Grant’s voice came through the walkie-talkie, Luke, who was escorting the food thief, couldn’t help but suck in a breath.

“That was fast! Didn’t we just get the suspect’s sketch? We were still checking the surveillance footage for her whereabouts,” he said.

Then a grin spread across his face. He added, “Awesome! That’s the power of technology!”

Alex’s face lit up with a confident smile as he adjusted his glasses.

“After Nina sent over the suspect’s sketch this morning, I got my tech guys to scan it into the system right away. We kicked off an AI facial recognition search and ran cross-checks against all our databases,” he explained.

There was a hint of pride in his voice. He added, “Looks like our system locked onto the target, and our officers moved in and made the arrest.”

Nina muttered in confusion, “Huh?”

Luke couldn’t help but gush, “Professor Summer’s really as capable as they say. No wonder he’s an overseas expert. Not only did he bring cutting-edge tech into the mix, but our case-cracking speed just skyrocketed!”

Alex nodded slightly and looked over to Nina, his tone supportive.

“Your sketch really made a difference in catching the suspect this time. Don’t worry. I’ll be sure to put your name in my report,” he reassured her.

He gave her a broad, seemingly generous smile. “I’m never shy about giving credit where it’s due.”

Nina just blinked at him, looking completely blank. “Huh?”

Alex noticed her dazed look, and his self-satisfied grin got even wider. “See what I mean? This is what happens when you put technology to good use. That’s how we nailed the suspect so fast.

“Meanwhile, you’re still sticking your nose into random side gigs, chasing after some delivery thief.”

He threw in with a mocking tone and continued, “Honestly, if you spent your time doing something legit, like chatting up all those stray cats and dogs on Snack Street. You might’ve even beaten me to the punch.”

The students, already riled up over the food thief, instantly pushed back at Alex’s comments.

“Who are you supposed to be? At least Nina actually did something and caught the guy. You can’t be bothered when our food gets swiped.”

“Seriously! This dude steals all the time. The total is more than enough for the cops to get involved. He’s a legit thief! So now only hunting murderers is impressive? Snagging a thief isn’t even worth mentioning?”

“So at our school, students losing their food doesn’t even count as a real problem? Guess it’s way beneath an expert like you to care about us.”

“Honestly, Nina’s warm-hearted and always helping out! She was solving cases and ended up cleaning up the trouble for everyone while she was at it!”

Alex glanced at the group of young, fired-up students and shook his head, a wry smirk tugging at his lips.

He sneered, “Sorry to break it to you, but busting a killer will always outshine catching some delivery thief. Is that really such a tough concept for you?”

Just then, Nina’s phone buzzed. It was Simon calling. She picked up right away.

Simon’s voice came through. “Nina, I’ve already caught the suspect at Unity Mart.”

Nina switched to speakerphone. “Hey Simon, I can’t hear you. It’s super windy over here. Can you say that again, louder?”

Simon paused for a second, then did as she asked and raised his voice. “I’ve already caught the suspect at Unity Mart!

“There’s a cold storage room beneath the supermarket. It seems to be the main crime scene where dismemberment took place.

“We’ve just brought the suspect in to the station, so I finally had a second to call you.”

Every word blasted out of the speaker, sharp as a slap, and Alex’s confident smirk vanished in an instant.

He just stood there, dumbfounded, totally blanking for a moment.

All that righteous momentum he’d been ready to use to school Nina fizzled out, getting stuck in his throat so badly he couldn’t squeeze out a single word.

He stared in disbelief and thought, ‘What? Why is it always Simon? Where the hell is Unity Mart?’

The students standing nearby heard everything from the phone call and immediately burst into animated chatter.

“Awesome! They got the murderer! I can finally stop stressing out every night!”

“Wait, so it was Nina’s brother who actually caught the murderer? I thought that professor was bragging about his tech solving the case!”

“Right? He was just preaching to us like he was some big shot, but in the end, he had nothing to do with it!”

“Nina and her brother are on fire! Nabbing both a killer and a thief in one day. How do they make it look so easy?”

“Whoa, this all happened in just one morning? That’s wild!”

Nina turned to the crowd, her voice steady and comforting. “Alright, everyone, chill out and take care of yourselves. Good food and good sleep are what really matter. We’ve got your backs, okay? The police are here for you, always!”

Alex stood there, his face burning red with embarrassment, wishing he could just disappear into the floor. Even his ears were so hot they felt like they might catch fire.

Luke, who’d just been singing Alex’s praises, was now just as mortified, face flushed.

He quickly pulled himself together and said seriously, “I’m bringing the food thief straight back to the station! Since he has stolen so many times and for so much, we’ll be sure to handle this properly and give everyone an answer!”

With that, he hurried off, practically dragging the thief away from the scene.

Alex turned on his heel and rushed off, embarrassed, unable to face everyone’s silent, judging stares. Even his retreat radiated pure défeat.

The students grinned as they grabbed their food, and lunchtime instantly turned into a gossip fest.

Word about everything that went down outside the dorm spread like wildfire across campus.

Nina crouched down and spoke gently to the stray kitty squad. “Thanks for helping out today, everyone! I’ll be around the school lab a lot more. If you ever run into trouble, just come find me, okay?”

The cats lit up at the news, thrilled they’d get to see the girl who actually understood them and always stood up for them.

They started meowing like crazy, tails straight up, circling and rubbing against her as if they never wanted her to leave.

“It’s a deal!” they said.

As noon rolled around, the cafeteria started buzzing with activity. Nina sat by the window, a beautifully plated VIP meal from Goodwin Hospital set in front of her.

And it wasn’t just for Nina. The Squirrel Bros and Pearlie got their own custom VIP meals.

The Goodwin Hospital delivery staff always made sure to call Nina before dropping off the food, double-checking how many servings she needed and which little animal buddies would be joining her that day.

At the moment, the Squirrel Bros and Pearlie were all cozied up beside Nina, each perched on their own little chair, holding special bowls and munching away in pure bliss.

Chubby happily chewed, his eyes squinting with delight as his tail twitched. “Mr. Goodwin’s meals are so tasty!”

Pearlie was just as dazzled by the feast, but he couldn’t help rubbing against Nina’s hand and piped up. “But honestly, nothing beats your home cooking! It’s the absolute best, paws down!”

Tabby King was a no-show today. The campus stray cat crew had whisked him away for a big feast, rolling out the red carpet to treat their royal boss to some serious VIP grub.

Nina picked up her fork and started eating slowly, savoring every bite.

No matter where she was sleuthing or how late her investigation ran, the VIP meals from Goodwin Hospital always arrived right on schedule.

Even when Simon dropped off food for her, Quentin would have the nutritionist carefully plan out every nutrient, then gently remind Nina to finish the parts he’d selected for her.

Nina sometimes thought Quentin treated her like some kind of special surveillance target.

But the difference was seriously noticeable.

After sticking with Quentin’s VIP meal plan for more than two weeks, Nina felt/way more energized. Even those groggy afternoons that used to hit her out of nowhere hardly bothered her anymore.

And her old habit of scarfing down food totally disappeared. Thanks to Quentin’s rule, she’d started taking it slow, chewing everything carefully and actually enjoying her meals for once.

But Quentin had been away on business for quite a while now. It was more than two weeks, and he still hadn’t come back.

Nina was starting to miss Shadow.

She just wanted to pet his big, fluffy tail.

After finishing her meal, Nina carefully arranged her empty plate and snapped a photo, sending it to James.
