Chapter 143

Emily took a deep breath, feeling as if a massive weight had been lifted off her chest.

She finally admitted, “The so-called new vaccine from Summer Veterinary Group, FlashVax, is just your PawGuard reworked with some aggressive tweaks. They’ve turned up the potency, way stronger than before.”

Nina’s eyes widened in shock.

She’d been wondering how the Summer Group had managed to roll out a new vaccine so fast. It turned out that they just slapped a new label on her achievements and cranked up the dosage, never mind the risks to stability.

Emily went on, “I stumbled upon it by accident while working on the project. The whole thing was moving at lightning speed. There was barely any time to catch my breath.

“I wanted out, but the Summer Group slapped the contract down and told me I’d have to cough up a massive penalty if I quit halfway through.”

She gave a bitter smile, exhaustion etched across her face. “I kept going, even though it felt like I was betraying my conscience. Honestly, it was mental torture every single day.

“And with all the vicious competition inside the Summer Group and the nonstop stress, I was finally diagnosed with anxiety. It wasn’t until I brought in a doctor’s note that they finally let me walk away.

“I’ve finally told you everything. It’s like a huge weight has been lifted off my chest, Maybe I can finally get some real sleep.

“I’m sorry, Ms. Summer.”

Even though Emily’d only uncovered the truth by accident after joining the project and never meant to infringe on Nina’s vaccine patent, she still felt horribly complicit in the whole mess, especially since Nina was her lifesaver.

“I just couldn’t bring myself to tell you before. I was terrified of what the Summer family might do to me,” Emily admitted.

She looked up, her gaze a mix of remorse and resolve. “But when you appeared in my life and even saved me, I realized it was destiny telling me I needed to face this.

“If I don’t tell you the truth, I’ll never be able to truly put this behind me.”

Nina’s face darkened as she took in everything Emily said.

She stayed silent, her eyes guarded and carefully weighing her next move,

“If you decide to take Summer Veterinary Group to court for patent infringement, I’ll stand up and testify for you,” Emily said, her tone sincere.

There was a hint of desperation in her voice as she continued, “I’m so sorry. If you want, I’ll do anything to make it up to you. I can even work for free if that’s what it takes.”

Nina let out a small smile, but her eyes stayed sharp and clear. “The person who owes me isn’t you.”

Emily’s voice grew urgent, anxiety clear in her tone. “But the new vaccine is set to launch the day after tomorrow!

“By the time you jump through all the legal hoops to get your PawGuard patent back and prove the Summer family’s vaccine is a rip-off, it’ll be too late,

“By then, the Summer family will have already made a fortune off it.”

Nina’s gaze was icy and cutting. She said, “This is your shot to redeem yourself.”

Emily was part of the Summer family’s new vaccine project. Nina had more reasons to be cautious. Her mind was working quickly. She needed to see if Emily was truly sincere and whether she’d really take her side.

If Emily was ready to help sort out all the evidence and bring down the Summer family, then maybe Nina’d have a reason to trust her.

Emily blinked, momentarily stunned. She asked, “What opportunity?”

Nina’s tone was calm, but there was no room for doubt or argument. “Since you helped develop the new vaccine, I’m sure you’re very familiar with what goes into it.

“I want you to work with me to put together evidence. A complaint proving that this so-called new vaccine is highly similar in composition to my PawGuard.”

Emily nodded, but frowned. “I get what you’re saying, but the patent for PawGuard is still officially held by the Summer Group.

“Even if we can show that the new vaccine’s formula is nearly identical to PawGuard, the Summer family can always argue it’s just a legitimate upgrade, a reasonable iteration based on the original patent.

“Legally, there’s nothing really wrong with what they’re doing. I’m afraid it’ll be hard for us to stop this new vaccine from being released.”

Nina’s gaze was firm and commanding, making it clear she wasn’t taking no for an answer. “Just help me get all this evidence together. We’re on the clock. We have to get it done before tomorrow afternoon.”

The Summer family had previously claimed that her PawGuard vaccine failed quality inspections and had problems with its ingredients.

But now, Emily had pointed out that the new vaccine’s formula was nearly the same as PawGuard, only even more potent.

So if PawGuard was supposedly unqualified, wouldn’t that make the new vaccine even less acceptable?

All Nina had to do was submit the Summer family’s own report declaring PawGuard unfit, along with a comparison proving how similar the formulas were, to the regulatory authorities.

This would really leave the Summer family caught between a rock and a hard place.

Either they’d have to admit PawGuard wasn’t flawed at all, which would mean their original report was completely bogus.

Or they’d have to admit the new vaccine was just as unqualified, but they tried to push it out on the market anyway.

No matter how they sliced it, the launch got blocked. And everything swung in Nina’s favor.

In short, for the Summer family to stand by the new vaccine’s safety, they’d have no choice but to also acknowledge that PawGuard was never a problem either, since the formulas were nearly identical.

Which would mean that their so-called failed inspection report ended up blowing up right in their faces.

Emily could see’that Nina already had a counterattack mapped out, and a surge of hope ran through her. She gave a determined nod. “Alright, when do we start?”

Nina declared without a moment’s pause, “Now!”

They both powered up their laptops, sat across from each other, and got right to work, focus locked in as they started organizing the evidence.

From the afternoon into dusk and all the way until night fell, the two of them barely looked up from their screens, totally absorbed. Fingers flew over the keys without a break.

Meanwhile, the little ones weren’t just sitting around either.

Coco, always the little helper, carefully poured a cup of coffee for each of them, then clumsily scooted the cups closer with her tiny paws.

His brother, Chubby, was sneakily snagging nuts from the fruit bowl and munching away with a look of pure bliss, hoping nobody would notice.

Pearlie had been napping in the corner of the desk. He was probably still traumatized from the last time Nina used him as a mouse pad, so this time, he kept well clear of her right hand, curling up safely and snoozing like a fluffy ball.

As the night wore on, the office glowed brightly, the silence broken only by the soft clatter of keyboards mingling with the faint rustling of the little creatures.

Just then, a few familiar caws drifted in from outside the office window.

Mr. Crow was back!

Nina jumped up and headed for the door, giving Pearlie a playful poke on the butt as she passed the desk.

Pearlie blinked awake, groggy at first, but then remembered what Nina had told him during dinner. He needed to keep an eye on Emily and make sure she didn’t pull any funny business while Nina was out.

He shook off sleep, eyes darting back and forth like a little security guard, locking onto Emily and refusing to let his guard down.

Emily stayed glued to her laptop, typing away like her life depended on it, sometimes pausing to mess with her hair in frustration. She was totally normal, nothing suspicious there.

Pearlie relaxed a little, but stuck to his mission, determined to keep watch like Nina had asked.

Outside the office, Nina whispered urgently to Mr. Crow, “Did you bring the stuff?”
