Chapter 146
Chapter 146
Nina finally understood and thought Lab S1 was really different.
Just then, Spencer’s voice cut in again, a hint of caution in his tone.
He said, “Actually, Lab S1 is under Mr. Bennett’s control. If you want to use it, you’ll need his approval. But…”

He paused for a moment and then continued, “Mr. Bennett is quite eccentric, and honestly, he’s pretty arrogant.
“Even an associate professor who played cards with him all the time got shut down instantly when he tried to apply for
access.”
The message couldn’t be clearer. If even someone close to Ronan couldn’t catch a break, then Nina, who had zero personal connection to him, didn’t stand a chance.
Spencer saw Nina deep in thought and added kindly, “If you’re really interested, I could introduce you to Mr. Bennett.
“If you’d like to give it a try, I can put in a good word for you with Mr. Bennett.”
But instead of hesitating, Nina’s eyes brightened. She just shook her head with a small smile. “No need, thanks, Mr. Gray.”
Nina thought to herself, ‘Yesterday, Mr. Bennett asked for another batch of the animal snacks I made!’
Last time, when Ronan was operating on the red panda, Nina brought him some treats, and he couldn’t stop raving about them.
Nina dipped her head, fingers moving lightning-fast as she pulled up her contacts and, without hesitating for even a moment, fired off a message to Ronan.
Grant had come to update Wilfred on the case, but unexpectedly found himself caught up in the middle of this lab allocation mess.
As an outsider, he knew it wasn’t his place to meddle in university affairs, but watching the scene unfold, it made him frown.
Especially when he glanced at Claire.
Claire, Alex’s sister, had the powerful Summer Veterinary Group backing her And yet, here she was, still vying for access to a university lab.
Grant always saw Nina and Simon as his own kids. Every time he watched them crack a case, it was like seeing two young saplings grow taller and stronger day by day. It filled him with deep and quiet pride.
Right now, he felt a surge of anger rising in his chest, almost too hot to keep inside.
Keeping a calm face, Grant pulled out his phone and quickly fired off a message to Nina.
[Nina, what kind of experiment do you need to conduct?
Send me your application documents. I have a friend in the Agriculture and Forestry Department. Maybe they can help you get a lab.J
Just then, Nina looked down at her phone and saw two notifications pop up one after the other.
One was from Grant. She looked up, gave him a grateful look, and shook her head lightly, signaling that it wasn’t necessary.
The other was a reply from Ronan.

Without hesitating. Nina opened Ronan’s reply first.
The conference room fell into a quiet hush, nobody saying a word.
Breaking the tense silence, Claire suddenly stood up, her voice gentle yet unmistakably clear.
Claire said. “Guys, let’s not make this hard on each other. We’re all working toward scientific progress.”

She glanced around the room. her sincerity just right. “Here’s my suggestion. I could step back and let Nina use Lab Al
Claire gave Nina a subtle look and continued. “It’s just that the last few rounds of tests for FlashVax Vaccine still have to be finished in Al. So… Nina, you might need to hang tight a bit longer.
“But rest assured, as soon as I’m done, I’ll make sure all our team’s equipment, files, and medical staff are cleared out right
away.
Wilfred’s face instantly relaxed, as if he’d finally found a way to break the deadlock.
He turned to Nina, his tone carrying an unmistakable authority, with a hint of reproach. “Nina, you’re a reasonable person. You know what’s important here, don’t you?”
He added, “FlashVax Vaccine is about the honor of the entire Department of Veterinary Medicine at Jelasburg University! When it comes to something this big, why get hung up on a little delay?”
His voice was steady and clear. On the surface, he was talking to Nina, but he was really directing his words at Spencer, who was standing nearby.
It was like everyone was acting as if all the drama was just Nina and Spencer being immature and too pushy. Anyone watching would think the blame was laid squarely at their feet.
Her phone buzzed. Nina glanced down briefly, then looked back up, a chill and confident smile spreading across her lips.
Nina said, “Mr. Sullivan, you misunderstood. I’m not pressuring anyone.
“I’ll just step back and not apply for Lab Al.”
Claire could barely hide the smirk tugging at her lips.
Her fingers locked around the symbolic key to Lab Al, the cold metal pressing into her skin and sending a rush of unfiltered triumph straight through her.
After all this time, she’d finally gotten the upper hand over Nina.
It was like taking a sip of victory’s sweet aperitif, right before the FlashVax Vaccine was about to launch.
When Wilfred heard Nina finally back down, he quietly let out a sigh of relief.
At least Nina knew when to back off. She didn’t push things too far and made him lose face.
He was just about to nod in approval.
But Nina’s voice cut in again, clear and calm. “Mr. Sullivan, you did say that no matter which lab I applied for, I wouldn’t have to pay rent, right?”
Wilfred frowned, his tone tinged with impatience. “That’s what I said. Do I need to repeat myself?”
Just then, Nina slowly turned her phone so everyone could see her chat with Ronan.
“I just checked in with Mr. Bennett,” Nina said.

Her voice wasn’t loud, but it was like tossing a stone into a perfectly still lake. The shockwaves rippled through the room.
“Mr. Bennett replied that I can use Lab S1,” She announced, enunciating every word.
For a moment, the conference room became absolutely silent.
Wilfred looked like he’d swallowed a bug. His eyes went wide as he stammered, “W-What?!”
“This is impossible!” He almost sprang out of his chair, his voice turning sharp with disbelief.
He continued, “How did that old man ever say yes to you?
“You’re not even family! He doesn’t even give me the time of day, not even for my sake!”
Meanwhile, the elegant, victorious smile that had just blossomed on Claire’s face froze and shattered in an instant.
Her face went ghostly pale in the blink of an eye, her nails digging so hard into her palms that it must’ve hurt.
She thought, ‘Only professors could use Lab S1!
‘How could Nina possibly get access to it in the blink of an eye?
‘But it was Mr. Bennett, the notoriously picky and downright eccentric legend of the campus, who gave the personal go- ahead? Seriously?’
Claire knew Ronan had once operated on that red panda. She convinced herself that Nina must’ve begged some bigshot at the Jelasburg Police Department for a favor, pulling strings just to get Ronan on board.
‘When did Nina even have the chance, or the tricks, to get in so deep with Mr. Bennett?’ Claire wondered, totally thrown for a loop.
At that moment, Wilfred shot out of his seat, made a beeline for Nina, and got so close to her phone he was practically peering through the screen.
He glared at that approval message as though he could wipe it off the screen with sheer willpower.
