Chapter 168

Chapter 168

Charles kept calling over and over, but all he heard was ring after ring-no one picking up on the other end.

At last, he got the automated message saying the phone was switched off.

Yeah, he’d definitely been blocked.

Charles froze on the spot, locked in an awkward stare-down with the security guard, who wore a smug look like he’d known this would happen all along.

The whole atmosphere was seriously cringe.

“Get out of here,” the guard snapped, waving him off. “Hang around any longer and I’ll call the cops

Charles’s face was grim. He glanced at Claire in her wheelchair inside the car and tried a new angle, “We’ve got a disabled guest here! Can’t you make an exception?”

After getting kicked by Little Alpaca, Claire could walk a little now after her recovery, but long distances were still way too much for her, so she had to rely on her wheelchair.

“Are you guys really this cold?” Charles pushed. “No basic convenience, and you’re refusing guests? Is this how you treat people here?”

The guard let out a mocking laugh. “Oh, you want to visit, huh? Sure thing-go stand in line over there and buy a ticket

He grabbed a park guidebook from the booth and flipped right to a certain page. “For guests who have trouble walking we’ve got guides dressed in mascot suits to help you out-real VIP service!”

He purposely raised his voice, dripping with sarcasm. “But you don’t even want to buy a ticket? Just trying to mooch your way in? Man, that’s pretty shameless, don’t you think?”

Charles glanced over to where the guard had pointed and saw that the ticket line was ridiculously long.

He went off, snapping, “What the hell? I’m the park director’s dad! You seriously expect me to stand in line and buy a ticket?”

The guard let out a mocking laugh, making sure everyone nearby could hear. “You won’t even shell out 20 dollars for a ticket, and you think you can pretend to be Ms. Summer’s old man?

“Who are you, some broke distant cousin hoping to climb the social ladder here?”

He planted his hands on his hips, zero sympathy in his stance. “Listen up-even if God himself showed up today, he’d have to wait in line and buy a ticket just like anybody else!

“Or book ahead on the app and enter by the rules, same as everyone!”

The guard was fired up now, pointing right at that Mercedes. “Let me guess, you probably rented that car just to pretend you’re some big shot!

“Now that our zoo’s business is booming, you come running over, hoping to bug Ms. Summer and snag some perks for yourself, right?”

By now, the entire crowd waiting to get into the zoo was sucked into the commotion, gawking and whispering as the drama played out.

Some folks just peered over curiously, while others didn’t hesitate to whip out their phones.

Charles’s cheeks flushed deep red as the guard roasted him in front of the whole crowd, leaving him utterly crushed by the

Defeated, the three Summer family members had no choice but to slink off, park the car, and quietly make their way to the ticket booth-blending into the long line of regular visitors and obediently waiting their turn like everyone else.

For the Summer family, who were used to getting VIP treatment wherever they went, each face looked gloomier and more sour than the last.

Charles led the way toward the park director’s office, face set in a scowl.

As he walked, he muttered under his breath, “Nina-ever since she left us, she’s gotten way too wild out here. Can’t even follow the rules anymore.

“Without the Summer family watching over her, she’s lost all sense of decency.”

Susan, Charles’s wife, was struggling in her impractical high heels as she pushed Claire’s wheelchair, her face so dark it looked like she could start a thunderstorm.

She muttered in a bitter undertone, “Just as I thought-not our blood, never was. No matter how we try to teach her, she never learns. No matter how we raise her, she just won’t ever belong to this family!”

Charles’s gaze darkened for a second at Susan’s bitter words. He snorted coldly, echoing her anger, “Yeah-raising her was like bringing home a wolf. Nothing but trouble!”

Claire, sitting in her wheelchair, looked up at just the right moment, her voice choked with guilt and tears. “Dad, Mom, please don’t be angry. It’s all my fault.

“If someone hadn’t tried to ruin us by maliciously reporting the FlashVax Vaccine, our family wouldn’t have ended up having to come all the way here just to ask her for help.”

Susan jumped in immediately, her tone full of distress. “Claire, don’t talk nonsense! How could any of this be your fault?

“This is all on Nina! She doesn’t have what it takes to develop her own vaccine, so she’s jealous of your success-and now she’s pulling every dirty trick she can to drag our family down!

“She can’t stand to see us happy for even a second if her own life’s going nowhere. She just wants to see us suffer, too!”

Claire tried to reassure them, her voice gentle. “Dad, Mom, please, don’t be mad. We can still start over on the vaccine if we have to.”

Then Claire changed the tone, her expression brightening with a perfect, comforting smile. “Plus, I’ve got some good news for you.

“Dad, haven’t you been looking for a premium ingredient supplier for your new high-end dog food?”

Charles perked up instantly. “What is it, Claire? Did you find a source?”

Claire smiled, full of poise and assurance, “I’ve already started talking to a top national agricultural center right here in Jelasburg.

“One of my old college seniors is doing research there, and he’s already handed our cooperation proposal directly to the base’s director-Professor Eloise Coleman.”

“Ms. Coleman?” Charles’s whole face lit up-the gloom gone in a flash.

All at once, he was grinning in disbelief and excitement. “We’ve tried so many times to work with Ms. Coleman’s center, hoping they could supply the key ingredients for our pet food.

“But every time we sent someone to negotiate, they couldn’t even get close to meeting Ms. Coleman-always got politely
