Just then, Liam, one of the zoo staff, jogged over and handled Nina a document. “Ms. Summer, this just arrived from the Forestry Bureau.

“It’s about the wildlife subsidy application for the pair of red-crowned cranes officially joining Forest Isle Zoo. Could you sign it for me?”

As soon as Liam finished speaking, Susan, who had been rambling nonstop, suddenly choked on her words, her smug expression freezing. “What?”

Claire, sitting in her wheelchair, suddenly grasped her skirt tightly, her knuckles turning pale.

Charles’s eyes widened in utter disbelief. “A national first-grade protected species? How could one possibly be assigned to a small zoo like yours?”

Just then, Susan’s phone buzzed, and her employee’s voice came through, sounding shocked and uncertain. “Mrs. Summer, I think Ms. Summer doesn’t need us to buy trending topics to clean up her image anymore.

“Just now, the hashtag [Nina Summer Helps Police Crack Spy Ring] shot straight to number one on the trending charts!”

Those words landed like a thunderclap, leaving everyone in the room speechless.

Claire, still forcing herself to appear calm, instantly snatched up her tablet, her fingers shaking as she tapped into the trending search page.

She saw that the topic was already stamped with an explosive, bright red HOT tag.

The internet had totally flipped-the online scene was absolutely blowing up.

[Oh my god! So treating a red-crowned crane actually revealed poisoned well water, and on top of that, they managed to catch a spy?]

[I couldn’t even make this up if I tried, but here you guys are actually pulling it off!]

[All those people who used to trash Nina must be regretting it now. She’s basically a real-life superhero!]

[Nina is such a badass! This is the type of idol we should be following!]

[Tomorrow’s Forest Isle Zoo open day, right? I’m booking my ticket ASAP! Gotta see the legendary crane that busted the case myself!]

The day before the open day, Nina and Forest Isle Zoo’s names totally ruled the trending charts.

All the spots for the open day had been snatched up in a flash, and even the next week’s bookings were jam-packed-scoring a ticket was basically impossible.

Nina swept a breezy look over the three, catching their stormy faces, a half-amused, half-mocking smile teasing the corner of her lips. “So, you three showed up with all this drama-planning to get front-row seats to your own epic embarrassment?”

Her voice was relaxed, but every word had a sting. “Since you went through all the trouble to come, might as well take the grand tour. 20 dollars a ticket-totally worth every cent.”

She paused deliberately, her gaze flicking up with playful mockery. “Getting served a full dose of humiliation right to your door? Trust me, you won’t find this kind of VIP experience anywhere else.”

Susan slapped her phone shut, her face flushed with fury as she pointed at Nina. “The crane’s injury had nothing to do with you? Why didn’t you say so earlier?”

Chapter 170

Nina gave a helpless shrug, looking innocent. “Didn’t the city wildlife rescue center already has an off are you guys were the ones all in on those conspiracy theories. How is that my problem?

Seeing that Nina was absolutely refusing to cooperate-not to mention coming back to the Summer family-Chattes was freaking out.

For the PawGuard Vaccine to be re-released, every single step, from top to bottom, needed Nind’s personal signature at her full cooperation.

At this point, he was sick with regret-he could kick himself for ever doubting her.

If he’d just played it straight and put PawGuard out there from the start, none of this disaster would’ve happened. All hed have to do was cut Nina in for a tiny 10% share.

Charles practically hissed the words out, “You poured your heart and soul into developing PawCoard, and you’d really raber let it sit and gather dust than work with us to relaunch it?”

Nina met his angry eyes, her tone impossibly calm. “I remember what you did to me-and what you did to my vaccine, too. Believe me, I haven’t forgotten.

“I’m not a fool. I won’t fall for the same trick twice.”

Just then, Claire spoke up gently, her voice deliberately soft, as if trying to make peace. “Nina, if you’re really willing to come back, I can give up the director’s spot at Summer Veterinary Group.”

Charles and Susan both stared at Nina in shock and pain, their eyes full of blame. “She’s already giving up so much for you- what more do you expect?’ they wondered.

Charles pressed harder. “My daughter’s ready to hand over the director’s job to you. What more do you want?”

Nina gave a light laugh, her gaze icy. “As if I’d ever want that. Talk about thinking too highly of yourself”

Charles, clearly stung, snapped, “Drop the attitude! How could being the director of some tiny zoo possibly measure up to running Summer Veterinary Group-whether it’s pay or future prospects?

“You should quit while you’re ahead and stop pushing it!”

“Dad, please don’t get angry,” Claire said, pulling Charles back at just the right moment. She turned to Nina, her eyes watery, voice growing softer and sounding hurt.

She added, “Nina, I know you’re still upset. I can tell you’re resisting. But how can you keep working on the vaccine all alone! Are you really willing to bury all your talent in a small zoo like this?”

She leaned forward a bit, her voice earnest, acting as if she truly cared about Nina. Just come back home. The Summer family will support you no matter what.

“Besides us, who else would really be willing to back you up-or take on the risks of your research? We could help you recover, pay for all the huge medical bills.”

Every word from Claire seemed heartfelt, but beneath that kindness, she was hinting that Nina was on her own, with no real

choice left.

Just as Claire kept insisting she only had Nina’s best interests at heart, a deep, vicious bark-almost a wolf’s howl-suddenly tore through the tension in the air, snapping everyone to attention.

Claire, sitting in her wheelchair, jumped and shivered before instantly going quiet, all her bravado gone.

Everyone turned toward the sound, only to see Quentin approaching, leash in hand, his fierce wolfdog Shadow striding

beside him.
