As soon as James finished talking, the three members of the Summer family turned pale.
Charles’s eyes widened in shock-there was only one thought left pounding in his head.
‘Didn’t Nina already get dumped by the Hayes family?’ Why’s Quentin even here? And why is he throwing such a crazy salary at her?’ he wondered.
Like a bolt of lightning, a reasonable explanation surged into Charles’s mind.
‘Nina must’ve pulled some shady stunt to threaten Mr. Hayes’s lifesaving wolf, Shadow, and that’s how she managed to get her hooks into Mr. Hayes!’ Charles thought.
Burning with jealousy, Charles completely snapped.
He didn’t care who was watching and yelled at Quentin, “Mr. Hayes! You barely know her, don’t let this girl play you!
“She’s an ungrateful leech, greedy to the bone-trust me, she’s only after your money! Be careful!”
Claire stood nearby, dropping her gaze right on cue, those long lashes trembling ever so slightly. Her voice was soft and sweet, with just the right touch of concern. “Dad, don’t talk about Nina like that.
“Maybe she’s just facing some rough patches and ended up a bit too obsessed with chasing money and success.”
On the surface, it sounded like Claire was sticking up for Nina, but really, she was stamping that gold-digger label on her for everyone to see.
Nina was honestly amused by just how delusional her family was.
She threw up her hands. “If I’m not after the money, then what else am I supposed to want? Unless you think I’m here just to get pushed around every single day?”
Susan, thinking she’d finally caught Nina red-handed, screeched and jabbed her finger at Nina, turning to Quentin. “Mr. Hayes, you heard her just now-she admitted it herself!
“She’s just after your money! You can’t trust a gold-digger like her to stick around-cut her loose!”
Charles immediately piled on, bristling with indignation. “Mr. Hayes, see? Today she’s bold enough to ask for five figures, tomorrow she’ll be demanding six! Her greed’s a black hole-she’ll never be satisfied!”
“Six figures?” Quentin let out a soft, mocking laugh, idly stroking Shadow’s neck. “If that counts as greed, then the whole big shot Summer family thing is clearly just for show.”
Quentin looked down at Nina at his side. “If she wasn’t eyeing my money, but something else entirely, that’s when I’d really start to worry.”
Charles was stunned speechless.
He was convinced that slapping the gold-digger label on Nina would make Quentin ditch her for sure, but Quentin’s reaction totally blindsided him.
Charles pressed on, his tone insistent. “Mr. Hayes, we’ve watched Nina grow up-we know her personality better than anyone.”
Susan hurried to chime in, panic in her voice, “She may come off all soft and harmless, but trust me-turn your back and she won’t hesitate to stab you.”

Quentin didn’t get mad-he just let out a sofi short, clearly amused.
“If Nina’s really got it in her to stab me in the back-” He smirked, “Honestly, I’d have to respect her skills.”

Nina looked up and locked eyes with Quentin’s intense gaze. A sudden blush crept up her cheeks, and she couldn’t hide her shock as her eyes went wide.
‘Quentin’s thinking totally caught me off guard. So this is what a real alpha’s mindset looks like?’ Nina mused. ‘Well, I guess that’s a new skill unlocked!’
Susan stared in disbelief, totally gobsmacked. She never expected the notorious cold king of the business world to react like this!
Charles was the first to react and wasted no time pushing Claire toward Quentin. “Mr. Hayes, honestly, Claire outshines Nina in every way!
“She grew up in hardship-never relied on family money-and clawed her way into the top veterinary college on pure grit. That’s what real talent looks like!”
Claire lowered her lashes at the perfect moment, her voice delicate and sweet. “Dad, please don’t say that. Nina didn’t waste all the years the Summer family invested in her-she’s actually really talented, too.”
Susan jumped in, trying to sound enthusiastic. “Mr. Hayes, we’re about to launch a brand-new line of premium dog food, already negotiating with top agricultural suppliers nationwide. If you’re interested in investing-”
“No need,” Quentin cut her off coldly, not even bothering to spare her a glance. “Hayes Group doesn’t do pet products.”
He looked down at Nina, and there was just a trace of resignation in his usually cold voice. “Just dealing with one beast language consultant and a zoo has already drained all my patience.”
Quentin obviously didn’t want to waste another second on the Summer family. He took a thermos from James and pressed it into Nina’s arms, giving her no chance to refuse. “You haven’t had your supplement yet.
“You’re always losing track of things. Busier than I am, honestly.”
Quentin’s unapologetic show of concern left the whole Summer family staring/jaws hitting the floor in shock.
‘Wait, the famously stone-faced Mr. Hayes really keeps track of Nina’s meals like that?’ they all thought, stunned beyond
words.
Just then, Charles’s phone vibrated. He glanced down at the screen, and his expression instantly turned stormy.
He looked up, shooting Nina a vicious glare-his voice was cold and threatening. “Nina, you’re gonna regret the choice you made today! Go too far, and you won’t have anywhere left to run!”
Nina wasn’t shaken at all. Instead, she cracked a dazzling, fearless grin-fresh, bold, and just a little bit badass
“Regret? The only thing I ever regret is wasting twenty-two years trapped in the Summer family,” she shot back.
“Anywhere left to run?” She tipped her head, eyes clear and firm. That never had a place in my life. I don’t need it, and I
never will.”
In the end, the Summer family slinked away with their tails between their legs.
Quentin tapped the bottom of the thermos with his finger, nudging her, “Come on, drink it or it’ll get cold.”
Nina downed it without a fuss and passed the empty thermos back to James.
Quentin passed her a tissue right on cue, brow slightly creased, but pretty much zero annoyance in his tone. “Seriously? You

eat even worse than the little snow leopard.”
Nina grinned, eyes curving into playful crescents as she wiped her mouth. “Mr. Hayes, you seriously saved my day! Showing up with Shadow right on cue.”
She crouched down and scooped the majestic wolf into a hug, rubbing her cheek against his thick fur.
“You totally came to be my backup, right? The moment Shadow walked in, somebody’s fake act instantly went quiet, she said.
She tipped her face up, beaming even brighter as she gave Shadow’s chin a good scratch. “Honestly, Shadow here is the real miracle doc-got the perfect cure for all the drama kings and queens out there!”
Shadow was all over Nina, bouncing with excitement, nuzzling her like crazy, tail spinning like a tornado-he even kept slapping Quentin’s pant leg every few seconds.
“Looking after Nina is my top priority! As long as I chase off all those pesky bad guys, she’ll be happy hanging out and playing with me all day long!” Shadow said.
Nina was hit with a wave of warm fuzzies and couldn’t resist squeezing her fluffy protector even closer.
Quentin watched the adorable scene between Nina and Shadow, then gave the wolf’s wagging tail a playful tap.
He shot Nina a teasing look. “Looks like my timing was perfect bringing him today-so, what are you gonna do to thank me?”
Nina tipped her head back, flashing a bright grin. “Tomorrow’s the zoo open day! I’ll make you a custom-themed meal Tell me, is there anything you refuse to eat?”
