Chapter 185 A Chance

Chapter 185 A Chance

Luke frowned, clearly puzzled. “Why would the culprit go to all that trouble just to frame Ms. Coleman?”

Simon didn’t answer directly. Instead, he turned to Eloise and asked, “Ms. Coleman, you said you came to the zoo today to discuss a collaboration, right?”

“Yes,” Eloise nodded. “I came specifically to invite Ms. Summer to be our special consultant on animal communication at the agricultural base.”

“Me? A consultant?” Nina’s eyes lit up with surprise, but then her expression turned serious. “So someone wants to ruin our partnership?”

“Seems like it,” Simon replied, eyes flashing. “This fire was aimed not just at the zoo, but at the partnership you and Ms. Coleman were about to set up.”

“Two birds, one stone. All of this was aimed right at you,” Simon said bluntly.

He paused for a moment and turned to Eloise. “Besides everyone at the base, did anyone else know you were sending feed as a gift to the zoo today?”

Eloise exchanged a look with her two students, sounding a bit helpless. “We loaded a whole truck with premium feed. Honestly, pretty much everybody at the base knew about it.”

Simon immediately seized on the clue, pressing, “Did you bump into anyone unusual on your way here, or after you arrived?”

Eloise’s eyes landed on Nina’s director badge, and something seemed to dawn on her. “Actually, before we left, we did run into Charles, chairman of Summer Group, and his daughter, Claire.”

Simon pressed, “What exactly did you talk about?”

“They wanted to team up with the agricultural base to get the ingredients for their dog food,” Eloise recalled.

She added, “But I called them out right away-their whole plan was all wrong when it came to nutritional balance. Told them they really should talk to an expert, like Nina, who actually knows animal health.”

She glanced at Nina, confusion in her eyes. “Nina, are you related to those two? Your surnames are the same.”

Nina shook her head, her lips curling into a mocking smile. “I used to be part of the Summer family and did a ton of

research for them.

“But instead of paying me royalties, they straight-up stole my work and pretended it was theirs all along.”

Eloise, being sharp as ever, suddenly had a lightbulb moment-her face changed. “Hold on.

“Could it be that because we refused to work with them, and then they caught wind I was joining forces with you, they just snapped and did something outrageous like this?”

Eloise kept shaking her head, clearly rattled. “Talk about petty. Dodged a real bullet there-not teaming up with them was the best decision I ever made.

“If I had, only God knows what kind of disaster we’d be facing now.”

Just then, one of Eloise’s students blurted out an anxious “Ah!” and raised his hand, looking pretty nervous.

“Ms. Coleman, now that you bring it up, I just remembered-when you were talking to Mr. Summer, I saw it was getting late, so I hurried you along and said, ‘If we don’t go now, our feed delivery for the zoo will be delayed.”

The student scratched his head awkwardly. “That must’ve tipped them off-the whole reason they knew our truckload of feed was for the zoo.”

“Now it all makes sense!” Eloise immediately turned to Oliver, her voice urgent.

“Officer, the clues are all there. Don’t waste your time with us-you should go question the Summer family right away!” she

said.

Luke shook his head, his expression grave. “Right now, all of this is just speculation. We don’t have any solid evidence that directly links the arson to Charles and his daughter.”

He added firmly, “I believe Professor Summer’s family wouldn’t do something like this. We can’t jump to conclusions until we have hard proof.

Nina narrowed her eyes. ‘I’m sure it’s them. The

ehind all this.’ Nina thought to herself.

‘All I need now is the proof. It’s time to deal a real blow to those pretenders, she seethed inwardly.

Simon was clearly thinking the same thing as his sister.

He clenched his fists, his face cold. “If the Summer family only learned about the zoo feed delivery after meeting Ms. Coleman, then the only chance for the culprit to plant that kite handle in the truck was after it left the agricultural base.” Simon turned to the driver, gaze intense. “Sir, try to remember-did the truck stop anywhere along the road?”

The driver frowned, racking his brain. “Yeah, we stopped twice. Once at a convenience store, I got out to buy a pack of cigarettes.

“And the other time was at East Suburb Gas Station, so I could use the restroom. After that, we headed straight for the zoo -didn’t stop again.”

Nina locked onto the key clue. “The zoo cameras prove no one except Eloise’s group even came near the truck. So whatever happened, it must’ve gone down during one of those two stops!”

Simon urged, “Can you give us the exact times and places for both stops?”

He turned to Luke. “We need to pull the security footage from the convenience store and the gas station, ASAP.”

Oliver frowned, a skeptical edge to his voice. “Mr. Reed, are you really that convinced Mr. Charles Summer is behind this? “They’re already bummed the partnership didn’t work out. We need solid proof before making accusations-can’t just decide the Summer family is guilty because you and your sister have a personal vendetta.”

Simon locked eyes with Oliver, his gaze calm and collected, quietly measuring his senior, who was three years older.

Luke glanced at the young man who’d already led a major investigation team, and couldn’t help feeling a shade competitive.

“Since we don’t see eye to eye,” Simon replied, voice steady but unwavering, “let’s see who can dig up the evidence to prove their point.”
