Chapter 191 Her Gaze Was Off

[Charles had Kason set the fire, and then sent the masked guy to take Kason out.]

Nina was both surprised and delighted when she got Simon’s messages.

She hadn’t expected to catch Charles so quickly.

With Simon by her side, she felt totally at ease.

She immediately shared her location with Simon.

[Charles is at the International Horse Expo. Simon, hurry up and get over here. I’ll keep an eye on him for you.]

Charles saw Nina glued to her phone, completely ignoring him, and he fumed.

Charles said, his tone sharp, “Look at you, acting all grown up now. An important guest is right here, and you’re just scrolling on your phone.

“It seems all those years of the Summer family’s manners were wasted.”

After sending the message, Nina looked up. The way she looked at Charles had completely changed. She was ready to snap back at him, but stopped herself.

After all, Charles was about to spend the rest of his life in prison. There was no point in arguing with him.

‘Come on, why waste my energy on someone who’s about to be locked up for good?’ Nina thought to herself.

Charles thought if he poked at Nina with a few sharp words, she’d fire right back at him.

He knew Karim hated people who were rude or acted all rowdy.

What Charles hadn’t anticipated was that Nina wouldn’t talk back. She simply lifted her gaze to his, her eyes unreadable and utterly off.

There was pity in Nina’s eyes, mixed with a kind of resignation, like she was staring at someone lying on their deathbed.

That look made Charles feel a sudden wave of anxiety, and his back started to break out in a cold sweat.

Nina looked right past Charles and greeted Karim in flawless Sahanese. “Hi, Mr. Karim, I’m Nina Summer, the veterinarian.”

“Sorry about that, I was just handling an urgent message from the police,” she added.

Nina was a natural when it came to picking up new languages.

During her internship with an animal rescue group, she even headed out to the Sahan desert to help with oryx, and learned some Sahanese while she was there.

“No worries. Police business always comes first,” Karim replied with a friendly/nod.

“I heard from Mr. Hayes that you’re also a special consultant for the police,” he added.

He was pleasantly surprised to hear Nina speak his language so fluently. It genuinely delighted him.

Right away, he slipped off the huge ruby ring from his finger and dropped it into Nina’s palm.

He did it so nonchalantly, like he was handing her a piece of fruit candy instead of a ruby ring.

Karim grinned, showing off his diamond-studded teeth. “Ms. Summer, you speak our language so well. I’m truly impressed. “Consider this a little welcome gift.

“And if you can heal my Akhal-Teke, there’ll be an even bigger gift in store for you.”

Karim just slipped the ruby ring into Nina’s hand out of nowhere, leaving her totally dumbfounded.

Karim had a translator in a sharp suit by his side, ready to relay his compliments to Nina.

Charles listened to the translation, his eyes going wide as he stared at the ruby ring in Nina’s hand.

He’d just been talking to Karim for ages, practically talking himself hoarse.

But Karim had barely given him the time of day.

Charles totally lost his cool for a second. All that calm just fell apart.

He was barely holding it together as he turned to Karim, forcing a stiff smile. “Mr. Karim, I think there’s been a misunderstanding.

“She just tagged along with our team. She wasn’t supposed to be here.”

But after the translator finished, Karim just shook his head calmly.

He gave Nina an approving look, his voice clear and confident. “No, Mr. Summer.

“Ms. Nina Summer was personally recommended to me by Mr. Quentin Hayes himself.

“Mr. Hayes doesn’t pick just anyone. If he says she’s good, then she’s good.”

Charles’s face went pale, and he looked at Nina in surprise.

He scoffed, “Don’t think just because you’ve hitched your wagon to Mr. Hayes, you’re suddenly going to shoot straight to the top.”

Charles leaned in close to Karim, lowering his voice to badmouth Nina. “Mr. Karim, she’s my adopted daughter, nothing but a nerd, really.

“All she knows is how to cram from textbooks. Her medical skills are stiff and by-the-book.”

The translator didn’t bat an eye and fluently relayed everything in Sahanese.

“Mr. Summer says he had high hopes for Ms. Summer since she was a kid, and she’s a total prodigy, super smart, crazy hardworking, knows a ton, and her vet skills are solid,” the translator said.

Seeing Karim nod, Charles didn’t miss a beat and kept going.

“Nina’s up to no good. We booted her out, and she’s only here today to mess things up on purpose,” he said, his voice dripping with malice.

The translator chimed in again, “Mr. Summer adds that Ms. Summer has a strong independent character and a real sense of justice.

“She came here today purely out of a veterinarian’s compassion.”

Karim listened and then turned to Charles with a polite nod. “Mr. Summer, thanks for letting me know.

“I feel like I understand Ms. Summer a lot better now.”

Charles caught the approving look on Karim’s face and thought he’d totally nailed it. He finally broke into a triumphant, smug grin, convinced he’d won this round.

Nina wasn’t exactly fluent in Sahanese, but she could pick up on the main points.

The more she listened, the more stunned she was. Every time Charles tried to badmouth her, the translator turned every insult into a compliment.

Nina thought, totally impressed, ‘This translator is seriously next-level.

‘Who is he actually?’

Nina texted Quentin: [It’s kind of weird. Mr. Karim’s translator keeps helping me out.]

Quentin replied almost instantly: [Why is that weird? I’m the one who hired the translator.]

[There’s a bit of traffic. Hang tight for 10 more minutes.]

Nina’s eyes widened. ‘That explains everything, she thought.

Just then, the door to the meeting room swung open again, and a tall figure strode in.

It was Alex, looking sharp in a tailored suit.

He looked refreshed and confident, and the moment he stepped inside, that elite aura just poured off him, instantly making

him the center of attention.

Alex took a step forward and tried his best to greet Karim in the Sahanese he’d just crammed before walking in.

But compared to Nina’s smooth, effortless accent, his own sounded so stiff that it was like he was reading straight out of a textbook.

Charles’s face lit up with pride as he introduced Alex. “Mr. Karim, this is my son, Alex. He’s now a top police-appointed specialist.”

He made a point of stressing the word “specialist”, throwing a not-so-subtle glance at Nina, the so-called “consultant”. Charles bragged, “He just got back from overseas, where he worked with the detectives on an extradition case. He personally escorted a fugitive back home.
