Chapter 190 Thieves Robbing Thieves

Chapter 190 Thieves Robbing Thieves

Nina and Simon quickly changed into the cleaning uniforms they’d prepared earlier, pushed a cleaning cart, and kept their heads down as they entered the elevator in Sunshine Estates, Building 2.

The arson suspect, Kason, lived in 703.

Just as Nina reached out to press the button for the seventh floor, Simon beat her to it and pressed the button for the sixth. She caught on right away.

Simon wanted them to get off on the sixth floor first, and then quietly sneak up to the seventh via the stairwell, so they wouldn’t be seen right outside Kason’s door.

“To play it safe,” Simon whispered, “let’s send Chunky and Pearlie up first to scout out the seventh floor and see if anyone else is around. We don’t want to spook anyone.”

Nina gave a firm nod.

Meanwhile, Pearlie could barely contain her excitement in Nina’s jacket pocket.

Its tiny pink paws gripped the edge of the pocket, its round black eyes sparkling with excitement.

The elevator reached the sixth floor.

Nina gently set Pearlie down in the stairwell, crouched beside her, and whispered, “Pearlie, show off those chicken-stealing skills of yours. Be careful and go scout things out upstairs.”

Pearlie’s little ears twitched. ‘Nina is totally roasting me right now, she thought.

It flicked its tail and darted up the stairs like a white streak of lightning, vanishing around the seventh-floor corner in a flash. The stairwell went dead quiet.

Nina instinctively clung to Simon’s sleeve, even holding her breath a little.

After a moment, the patter of quick little feet echoed up the stairwell.

It was Pearlie.

It shot down the stairs like a little rice ball fired from a cannon, rolling and scrambling until it dove straight into Nina’s arms. Its whole body was trembling like it’d swallowed a motor.

“Nina, something’s up.” Pearlie, still freaked out, dove into Nina’s arms.

“I caught a whiff of someone hiding inside that huge metal container on the north side of the seventh floor,” Pearlie said. Nina’s heart clenched.

The metal container on the north side of the 7th floor was the electrical panel for this floor.

That cramped space had just enough room for a skinny adult to squeeze in.;

Nina’s expression shifted. “Is it someone alive? Or…”

Pearlie nodded vigorously. “Yeah. I could even hear him breathing.”

Simon picked up on the tension and whispered, “What’s wrong?”

Nina said, her voice tense, “Pearlie just told me. There’s someone alive hiding in the electrical panel on the seventh floor. “Could the suspect have found out we were coming and is already hiding in there?”

Simon’s eyes narrowed. “Don’t jump to conclusions. Let’s wait for Chunky to check things out.”

Just then, a familiar squeaking sound came from outside the window in the sixth-floor corridor.

Chunky was hanging upside down from the window ledge, calling out urgently, “Nina, there’s someone in 703. It’s a guy, the one from the photo you showed me.

“He’s kicked back on the couch, watching TV.”

Nina quickly passed on the intel, her nerves stretched even tighter. “If Kason is at home, then who’s hiding in the electrical panel?”

She and Simon exchanged a glance, a sudden chill creeping up their backs.

“Could it be someone the Summer family sent 16 Fit

Goosebumps prickled all over Nina as a chill shut down bes

Just as they figured out who the mysterious figure in the electrical panel might be, Chunky started squeaking like crazy,

Nina, my bat family just pinged me.

“The guy in 703 is opening the door. He’s about to come out.”

‘Kason was about to head out?’ Nina thought, her heart leapt into her throat.

“Let’s move,” Simon barked, darting up the stairs like a cheetah.

Nina followed close behind.

As soon as they burst onto the seventh floor, the sight that greeted them made their hearts skip a beat.

A masked man dressed in black was pressed against the wall beside 703, a dagger gleaming coldly in his hand, poised to stab the moment the door opened.

He’d clearly been lying in wait, just biding his time for Kason to open the door.

And right then, the door to 703 was just barely ajar, and Kason’s figure could be seen through the gap.

The masked man, who’d been lying in wait, heard movement from Simon’s direction and whipped his head around, a flash of panic in his eyes.

Nina instantly realized. This was the same guy Pearlie spotted hiding in the electrical panel.

He’d been waiting for Kason to step out, ready to take him out the moment the door opened.

But before anyone could react, Simon had closed the distance like a bolt of lightning. In one fluid motion, he seized the masked man’s wrist and twisted the dagger from his grasp.

Nina knew she was totally useless in a fight, so she’d already backed off to a safe distance. No way she was going to slow Simon down.

Just as Kason poked his head out of 703 and saw things going sideways, he tried to slip away, but Nina zeroed in on him instantly.

“Chunky, bat team, move out,” Nina called.

“Roger that.” Chunky spun in the air and let out a special sonar call.

In the next instant, the sound of flapping wings filled the air as a dark blanket of bats poured in through the window, swarming straight for Kason’s face.

“What the hell?” Kason was totally blindsided by the sudden bat attack. He clutched his head in panic and collapsed right

there on the floor.

The cops arrived just in time, swarming in and pinning the struggling suspect to the ground.

With the job done, the bat swarm melted away like a receding tide, vanishing into the night in a flash, leaving behind only a few tufts of fur and a suspect looking completely lost.

Sunshine Estates slipped back into silence under the night sky, as the masked man and Kason were each loaded into separate police cars.

Nina let out a long sigh of relief, pulled a piece of chicken from her pocket, and gently stroked Pearlie’s little head.

“If it weren’t for you catching that guy hiding in the electrical panel, we’d be in real trouble. You’re the hero today,” praised Nina.

Pearlie instantly grabbed the chicken with her tiny pink paws, her eyes squeezed shut in happiness as her fluffy body curled up into a little snowball.

It munched away, making happy little noises with every bite.

Nina’s eyes locked onto the police car with Kason inside.

She was sure she’d seen that face back in her school days at the Summer residence.

Kason, the guy who set the fire with a kite, used to slip in and out of Charles’s study all the time.

He was probably the guy Charles relied on for all his shady business.

Nina gently tugged on Simon’s sleeve. “Simon, there’s no way Kason’s only guilty of arson.”

“I get it.” Simon nodded, understanding her immediately. “Leave everything to me.”

“Go home and get some rest. You were the MVP today,” he said.

As he spoke, Simon gently stroked Pearlie’s neck, and then grinned up at Chunky circling overhead. “And Pearlie, our sharp little detective, you nailed it tonight.”

“Chunky, that sonic attack was epic. You led the bat team like a true commander,” Simon praised.

Pearlie puffed out her tiny chest with pride, letting out a satisfied grunt as she nuzzled into Simon’s palm.

Chunky did a shy little loop in the air. “It was nothing,” he said. But he couldn’t help but puff his wings out, showing off just a little.

At last, the arsonist and the mystery man in black were finally caught.

The cops kicked off a full-blown investigation into the case.

From the little hints Simon dropped to Nina, it was obvious who the real target of the investigation was.

Charles was now squarely in the crosshairs of a full-scale investigation.

Time passed, but the investigation pressed on relentlessly beneath the surface.

A week later, the Jelasburg Expo Center played host to a highly anticipated international horse gala, drawing crowds from all over.

Top racehorses from around the world had gathered for the event.

It was a sight of sleek, elegant champion steeds all across the showgrounds, each one worth a million dollars in the horse world.

Nina walked into the expo center, dressed in a sleek black riding suit and tall boots.

Her long hair was styled into an elegant fishtail braid that draped over her shoulder.

Her lively eyes softened as she peered through the glass walkway, taking in the bustling horse arena below.

Led by an attendant, Nina was shown into a refined reception room.

“Ms. Summer, Mr. Karim will arrive shortly. Please wait here for a moment.” The attendant bowed slightly and quietly closed the door behind him as he left.

Karim was that rich Sahan tycoon Quentin had mentioned.

He owned an Akhal-Teke worth 50 million dollars, and right now the horse was down with some weird sickness.

Quentin was running late as usual.

Nina took a small sip of coffee, silently hyping herself up inside.

Nina thought, ‘Quentin helped me out so much. I have to get to the bottom of what’s making that Akhal-Teke sick this time.’ Ever since the zoo’s open day blew up, business had been booming. Monthly profits were about to break the five-figure

mark.

But with the crowds pouring in and the park way too cramped, they were maxed out. They desperately needed to expand. She could use Jelasburg University’s top-tier labs for free to work on new vaccines.

But the costs for materials, labor, and everything else were still massive. Tens of thousands could vanish in a blink, and it was starting to stress her out.

Nina fiddled with her pocket, feeling the money crunch closing in. She really needed to make some cash, and fast.

This time, she absolutely had to seal the deal with Karim. There was no room for failure.

Just as Nina was picturing what a Sahan tycoon might look like, a man in a traditional white robe walked in, chatting and laughing with someone she knew all too well.

It was Charles, the chairman of the Summer Group and her adoptive father.

“Mr. Karim, rest assured, our Summer Veterinary Group has already assembled a team of experts for your consultation,” Charles said.

Charles turned and spotted Nina in the VIP

He immediately turned to the attendant, him, his face instantly darkening. “Nina? What are you doing here?”

tone sharp. “Did you mess up? My daughter is Claire.

“Why did you let someone unimportant in here?”

Just as Nina was about to speak, her phone buzzed with a message from Simon.

[The police just decided to arrest Charles.]
