The Fake Heiress and Her Purrfect Partner novel Chapter 21

Chapter 21

Simon’s tense expression gradually softened as he answered the phone, his eyes flickering toward Nina, who lay quietly in the hospital bed. The soft hum of machines and the sterile scent of antiseptic filled the room, yet Nina’s heart fluttered with a mix of anticipation and unease.

“What’s going on, Simon?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper, a hint of worry threading through her words.

Simon’s lips curved into a gentle smile as he carefully adjusted the blanket around her shoulders. “I’m being transferred to the city police department,” he said, his tone calm but carrying an undercurrent of excitement.

“That’s sudden,” Nina replied, surprise and confusion mingling in her voice. “We just talked to Captain Cole last night.”

Simon nodded in acknowledgment but then shook his head slightly. “The chief mentioned that the city wants to borrow me for a while. It’s temporary.”

Nina’s lips formed a slight pout. “Temporary? That’s not exactly what I was hoping for.”

He reached out, brushing a stray lock of hair from her forehead, his smile reassuring. “Honestly, it’s the fastest way for me to be closer to you again. This way, we can keep tabs on each other.”

Nina’s gaze lingered on Simon as he mentioned the police advisor role. She noticed a flicker of interest in her eyes. “Don’t worry about me,” Simon said softly. “Just make sure you give Captain Cole your decision soon.”

He held up his phone, showing her a message. “Captain Cole just texted me. This temporary assignment at Jelasburg HQ is like a trial period. If it goes well, I’ll transfer officially, and we’ll be colleagues.”

The word “colleagues” resonated deeply with Nina. She thought of Alex, who was also a top consultant at Jelasburg HQ. A spark ignited within her, a fierce determination rising. ‘We’re going to leave Alex in the dust,’ she thought with quiet confidence. Now that she was on her own, free from the Summer family’s shadow, they could truly shine together.

“Simon, you’re incredible. I know you’ll stay for sure!” she said, her voice filled with hope and conviction.

Just then, a nurse knocked gently on the door and wheeled in a cart. She carefully set up a small table over Nina’s bed and pulled out what looked like a gourmet hospital meal, meticulously prepared.

Nina blinked in surprise. Having spent nearly every day in this hospital, she knew a meal like this would be extraordinarily expensive. “Um, nurse, I didn’t order anything special,” she said cautiously.

The nurse smiled warmly. “Ms. Summer, someone has already covered all your bills, including the meals. You can stay as long as you need.”

Then she placed a tray in front of Simon. “And this one is for you, sir—a companion meal. There’s also a fold-out bed if you want to rest.”

Nina’s eyes widened as she finally took in the room’s luxurious details—the bright, spacious environment, the kind of deluxe suite she’d only seen on medical dramas.

Simon lightly shook the meal box, a crease of concern forming on his forehead as the nurse spoke. His voice lowered, carrying a hint of unease. “Nina, do you know who saved you?”

She recounted the livestream incident. “Mr. Sinclair asked a friend to help. I’ll try to contact him and see if I can repay the hospital bills.”

Simon exhaled in relief, feeling more at ease knowing this wasn’t some favor with strings attached. He arranged Nina’s utensils with care. “No need to rush. Let’s eat first.”

Once they finished, Nina checked her livestream account and noticed private messages from someone named “Mr. Right.”

[Ms. Summer, do you offer in-person animal communication sessions?]
