Chapter 222

แร 1907

Lorelai gripped the edge of the hospital bed, a chilling realization dawning on her. “So that’s it! I never would have thought of that. Tanya’s situation was far more complex than anything that impostor Charles could have done.

“Your mother was simply too exceptional. Her return to the Summer family would undoubtedly make her a formidable heir, posing a direct threat to all other claims to succession.”

Nina suddenly understood the whole situation. She said, “Charles was no true son of the Summer family head. With Joanna having such dirt on him, he basically got booted off the succession list.

“That’s why he had to run off to Jelasburg to start over. I grew up right beside him. I know his strengths and weaknesses like the back of my hand. Now I can see it. He’s nothing but a weapon in Joanna’s hands!”

Lorelai’s voice shook with rage. “Your mother’s own siblings actually teamed up with that impostor, just to keep her down and make sure she never got accepted back into the family!”

“This is how Charles managed to pull off so much on his own. All for the Summer family’s fortune. Turns out family means nothing when money’s on the line. Absolutely insane, and disgusting!”

Nina’s expression turned icy, colder than ever before. She thought, “Turns out the Summer family is ten times. more twisted and shameless than I ever imagined.

‘No wonder whenever I had to travel back to the Summer family’s mansion for business, Joanna’s three kids always seemed so off with me.’

Now that she finally knew the truth, Nina blurted out, her voice urgent, “Lorelai, where is my mother right now? Is she safe?”

Nina and Simon had asked Lorelai this question when they walked in, but Lorelai hadn’t given them a straight answer. At this, Nina’s heart skipped a beat.

Lorelai gave Nina a reassuring smile and said, “Don’t worry. Tanya is fine. Two years ago, the Summer family showed up looking for her. We found her room completely ransacked, and some important research notes were missing.

“She realized she’d been exposed and had to leave right away. Luckily, a reliable friend tipped us off that the rainforest reserve near the border was hiring rangers. It was the perfect place to disappear.”

Simon picked up on it right away and asked with excitement, “So Mom’s still out at the border?”

Lorelai’s eyes shone with undisguised admiration. “No, that was just her previous job. Gold shines wherever it

goes.

“While Tanya was working in the rainforest, she came into contact with several confidential organizations. About six months ago, her exceptional skills and unique perspective got her noticed by the government,” Lorelai explained.

She lowered her voice, sounding both serious and proud. “She’s been recruited to join a highly classified research project. It’s still going, and everything about it is under wraps right now; even I don’t know where

she’s based these days.”

“I’ll find a way to reach out to Tanya and let her know you’ve been searching for her. Once the research wraps up, I’m sure you’ll be able to see her again soon!” Lorelai looked them in the eye and promised.

This unexpected good news instantly blew away all the gloom that the Summer family had dumped on Nina and Simon.

Nina was caught between happiness and bittersweet pain. The tears she’d been holding back for ages finally spilled down her cheeks like a string of pearls. From her mom’s stashed notes, Nina saw Tanya’s talent and effort.

Now, knowing that after surviving hardships most people couldn’t even imagine, her mom had fought her way to the top, where she truly belonged, making her mark like she was always meant to. Of course, she was beyond thrilled!

Nina threw her arms around Simon, her voice trembling with excitement. “Simon, this is awesome!”

Simon gently patted her back, his own eyes welling up. After a moment, he reached out and softly wiped the tears from her cheeks with his fingertips.

He said, “Alright, no more crying. Dad would be happy for us if he was watching. We’re all okay now, the three of us.”

Nina nodded hard. “Yeah! We’re all doing great! And things are only going to get better!”

Lorelai’s tears started to fall as well. “If Tanya could see how outstanding you’ve both become, she’d be bursting with pride and finally able to relax.”

Once she’d calmed down a bit, Nina turned to Lorelai and gripped her hands. “Lorelai, you need to take care of yourself, too. Thank you for always being there for my mom all these years.”

Lorelai told the truth without mentioning her own efforts. But Nina knew Lorelai had to have worked incredibly hard to make everything happen: keeping her mom safe all those years at the paint factory, and getting Benson to truly respect her.

Lorelai kept shaking her head, eyes full of gratitude. “Seriously, don’t say that! If anything, I owe you guys for bringing me back home.”

Nina gripped her hand firmly, her tone gentle but resolute. “Lorelai, we’re family now. No need for all that polite talk between us. I’ve already made friends with the takins up in the mountains!” She pulled out a whistle and handed it to Lorelai.

Nina said, “From now on, whenever you head up there to hunt for pigments or herbs, just blow this whistle. They’ll be your ride, and no matter how wild the trail gets, you’ll be just fine.

“Paying them is a breeze. Simply bring along some of their favorite salt bricks as ‘bus fare. And while you’re at it, toss in a scratch or two, maybe even help shoo away some bugs.”

Lorelai took the whistle, her fingers closing around it in a surge of excitement. This little thing was a total game-changer for the paint factory! Only she truly understood the brutal reality of those mountain trips for pigments.
