Chapter 246

:

Nina took the heavy card, and the cold, gold-flecked surface made her stop in surprise.

She blinked her dazed eyes and looked at the front desk in confusion. “Wait? When did I pay the bill? And when did I get this card?”

Nina even wondered if maybe those drinks tonight were just making her see things.

She rubbed her temples, her head spinning.

The sweet fruit wine at the celebration had packed more of a punch than she’d expected.

Quentin’s voice came from behind her, laced with amusement. “This is a special perk from Hayes Group for the chief animal communicator.”

Nina turned around in surprise. “You own this place?”

With all that cash rolling in lately, she was feeling pretty confident, even a little cocky. “The food here is amazing.”

As she spoke, she gave Quentin a friendly pat on the shoulder, then dropped a bombshell. “Quentin, just wait. Once I’ve got even more cash, I’m buying this place from you.”

The receptionist nearby was so shocked she almost dropped her pen.

‘Seriously? Someone actually called Mr. Hayes Quentin?’ she thought.

And Quentin didn’t even look annoyed.

Quentin just shook his head helplessly. “This place isn’t for sale.”

His eyes landed on her cheeks, tinged with a faint blush. “How much did you drink? You’re totally out of it.”

Nina, feeling defiant, poked his firm chest with her finger. “Just a little.”

Quentin gently took hold of her mischievous finger. “Quit fooling around. Let’s head back once we’re done eating.”

But Nina, with all the confidence in the world, pulled out the bank card she’d meant to pay with and smacked it against Quentin’s chest with a flourish.

She looked just like a rich lady picking out her favorite boy toy. “Mark my words. Quentin, one day, I’m gonna buy this restaurant off you.”

Before Quentin could even react, Nina’s eyes were instantly drawn to the Lucky Cat figurine sitting on the

front desk.

The Lucky Cat was blinged out in gold, covered in pretty gemstones that sparkled under the lights.

Without missing a beat, she just grabbed it and hugged it tight. “Bet this card’s got enough to cover this little guy. I’ll be taking this Lucky Cat, thanks. And one day, I’ll be taking over this whole place too.”

Nina leaned in close to Quentin, whispering conspiratorially, “Quentin, the bank card password is-”

“Mmph-” Before she could finish, Quentin quickly covered her mouth, leaving her to mumble unintelligibly.

With one arm holding the Lucky Cat and the other guiding the tipsy Nina, Quentin hurried them into the private elevator.

He was worried that if they stayed any longer, Nina would end up dragging him into her antics and embarrassing them both.

The receptionist was left standing there, totally stunned, her eyes darting between where Quentin walked off and the now-empty spot where the Lucky Cat used to sit.

Now it was just gone.

She kept replaying that wild scene in her head.

‘Who the heck is that girl?’ she wondered. ‘She actually slapped her bank card against Mr. Hayes’s chest like she was picking out a boy toy at a nightclub.

The elevator doors slid shut, sealing them off from all the outside commotion.

Nina had already snatched the Lucky Cat back, clutching it to her chest like a mama bear protecting her cub.

Her whole expression screamed, “Nobody’s getting their hands on my precious.”

Quentin watched her wobble around, frowning a little as he reached out. “Hand over the Lucky Cat for a sec. Careful, you’ll drop it and smash your leg.”

“No way,” Nina spun around in a flash, hiding the cat in her arms. “This is my restaurant’s Lucky Cat now.”

Quentin was at a loss for words.

After a whole lot of sweet-talking and gentle nudging, he finally got her into the car at last.

Quentin shut the car door with a firm click and signaled the driver to head out.

Nina, totally wiped out, finally quieted down, flopping into the seat with her prize in her arms, looking as content as a cat that’s just hoarded a pile of treats.

Quentin let out a sigh of relief and carefully tucked the bank card she’d shoved at him back into her bag.

As his fingers brushed the card, he couldn’t help but flick her forehead. “You’ve got to be more careful. You almost blurted out your password in public.”

But Nina just looked up at him with her big eyes, dead serious. “It’s okay if you know.”

Quentin was frozen by her words, his warning dying on his lips.

In the quiet car, only the sound of their heartbeats could be heard.

Nina hugged the Lucky Cat, looking totally sure of herself. “You wouldn’t even care about my pocket change:

Her eyes suddenly sparkled with a hint of smugness. “And if you ever dared to swipe my money, I’d hire Hayes Group’s legal team to sue you.”

She tried to look serious, counting off on her fingers. “That’s called embezzlement. You’d have to pay me back even more, and you’d end up in jail. And once you’re behind bars, I can snap up your restaurant for dirt cheap.

Quentin almost burst out laughing at her antics. “Alright, you and your Lucky Cat go ahead then.”

‘Well, that was a waste of getting all sentimental,’ Quentin thought. ‘Wait, wasn’t she supposed to be drunk?. She’s thinking pretty sharp for someone who’s supposed to be wasted.

When they got to the zoo staff dorm, Quentin carefully settled Nina onto the bed.

Pearlie heard the noise and popped out from the cozy nest she’d made for Nina. “Nina’s back.”

Pearlie tilted her head, giving Nina a puzzled look as she hugged the Lucky Cat tight.

Quentin glanced at Pearlie. Even though he couldn’t understand a word of Pearlie’s chatter, he still treated her like a messenger. “Make sure to tell her all about this tomorrow.”

“She made off with the crown jewel of my restaurant tonight.” With that, Quentin gently pried Nina’s fingers off the shiny golden Lucky Cat and set it on her nightstand.

The next morning, Nina woke up with her head pounding, rubbed her temples, and nearly jumped out of bed when she saw that totally random Lucky Cat sitting on her nightstand. “Wait, what? Where did this come from?”

Pearlie scurried over, clutching her little paws, and started whining and snitching right away. “Nina, the big bad Quentin said you snatched this from his restaurant last night.
