Chapter 249
When Simon exposed him in front of everyone, Esteban’s face darkened at once.
The crew behind him froze awkwardly as a group. Some suddenly found the floor fascinating, while others pretended to be experts in the ceiling. They all wished they could disappear on the spot.
Elowen’s hands trembled with anger as she pointed at Esteban. “So there was never any ghost in this house? You guys were just playing tricks to scare me?”
“Madam, there must be some misunderstanding,” Esteban said, trying to keep his cool.
“You’ve been hearing those noises at night for a long time, haven’t you? We’re really here to help you get to the bottom of this,” he added.
Esteban stepped forward, trying to pull Simon aside.

He dropped his voice, a cold threat in his tone. “Boy, out here, you’d better learn to mind your own business. Some messes aren’t for you to get involved in. Watch yourself, or you’ll get burned.”
Simon didn’t back down. Instead, a chilly smirk played at the corner of his mouth as he shot back, “Oh? So you’re threatening me now?”
When he saw Simon wasn’t playing along, Esteban’s mask slipped. “Yeah, I’m threatening you. So what? Just so you know, I’ve got powerful people behind me.”
As he spoke, he gave a subtle nod to his crew behind him.
The group of masters, who’d just been standing around awkwardly, instantly caught the signal and closed in, forming a wall of hostility around Simon, trying to use their numbers to put the squeeze on him.
This was exactly the cue Simon had been waiting for.
Unfazed by Esteban’s fierce glare, Simon smoothly pulled out his badge from inside his jacket and flashed it for everyone to see.
The deep blue cover caught the light, and the police emblem gleamed with undeniable authority.
“Perfect,” Simon said, his voice calm but full of authority. “I’m a cop. That threat you just made, plus your little scam earlier, gives me all the evidence I need.”
Simon’s eyes were sharp as he looked over the group, watching their faces go pale. “Let me spell it out for you. You’re all facing charges for organized fraud and threatening a police officer.”
Before Simon could finish, Nina smoothly raised her phone, the screen showing she’d been recording the whole time. “Ever since the Psychic Turtle made its grand entrance, your whole performance has been caught
on camera.”
She waved her phone, still on speaker, her tone light but every word cut deep. “Cloudville cops are already on their way here.”

“And just a heads-up,” Nina added, “the total amount involved is over a million bucks; none of you is getting away.”
As soon as Nina dropped that bombshell, everyone in the room sucked in a sharp breath.
“P-police?”
“Over a million bucks?”
Those words exploded in the living room like thunder, and the masters instantly lost their cool.
As soon as they heard they were facing charges for organized crime, the crew that had just been sticking together like glue instantly fell apart.
They started throwing each other under the bus, all desperate to save their own skins.
“Officer, it was all Mr. Yates. He forced us to do it. I was just the errand boy,” one of them shouted.
“Bullshit. You were the one who came up with the idea to draw those fake talismans for money. You even tore the talisman paper straight out of your kid’s homework book,” another shot back.
“At least I’m not as bad as you. That hundred-year-old cinnabar in your bottle is just ketchup. I literally saw you swipe it from the kitchen,” a third one yelled.
Fiona watched the whole mess explode into chaos, and all that pent-up anger she’d been bottling up finally came pouring out. She yelled, “Lock the doors. Not a single one of these con artists is leaving before the cops get here.”
These frauds had been stringing her grandma along for ages, and now they’d finally been exposed for what they really were.
When Elowen realized Simon was actually a cop, her eyes nearly popped out of her head, and she totally forgot to fidget with her beads.
Fiona’s cousin Danny saw things going south and instantly went full drama mode. He jumped up, pointed at the masters, and acted all devastated, immediately throwing them under the bus.
“Oh, wow. So all this time you were just a bunch of fakes,” he shouted. “I was so desperate to help Grandma, and you guys totally pulled the wool over my eyes.”
He turned to Elowen, grabbed her hand, sounding both sincere and aggrieved. “Grandma, it’s all because I was so worried about you. I let my guard down and fell for their tricks. You’re not mad at me, right?”
Elowen looked at her grandson’s anxious face, let out a helpless sigh, and gently patted his hand. “It’s alright. You were just deceived. I don’t blame you.”
Danny’s face instantly relaxed; he looked like a weight had been lifted off his shoulders.
Fiona shot Danny a frosty glare, then leaned closer and whispered to Nina, “I just don’t get it. Why are they so hell-bent on making Grandma sell her house?”

Nina gave a knowing smile, her eyes sweeping over the group of dejected con artists. “Don’t worry. Once the police finish questioning them, the truth will come out.”
“I’ll keep you posted as soon as I hear anything,” she added.
“I’m leaving it to you,” Fiona said with a serious nod.
When the Cloudville cops caught wind of a major organized fraud case, they sprang into action, showing up faster than you could blink. And when they laid eyes on Simon and Nina, one would think they were meeting rock stars.
With so many scammers in the mix, the police had to call in two vans just to round masters and pack them all off.

After the masters were rounded up and hauled off by the cops, the mansion that had been buzzing with chaos suddenly went dead quiet.
The lead officer shook hands with Simon and Nina, thanked them sincerely, and started wrapping things up with his team.
Just then, Chunky, who’d just woken up in its carrier, started pawing at the carrier door with its tiny claws and poked its fluffy head out. “Nina, did they catch all the bad guys?”
Nina couldn’t help but melt at how adorably sleepy it looked, and she nodded gently. “Yeah, they were just a bunch of scammers.”
But then Chunky suddenly tilted its head, its big ears swiveling around like tiny radar dishes.
“But I could’ve sworn I just heard that tap-tap-tap again. It sounded like something banging against the wall,” said Chunky. “It’s the same spooky noise that Madam kept talking about.”
Nina instantly tensed up, her eyes sharpening with alertness.
‘Bats are basically the top dogs when it comes to hearing; they can pick up sounds that humans wouldn’t even dream of catching,’ she wondered.
She leaned in and whispered to Simon and the officer beside her, “Simon, Chunky says it just heard that banging against the wall again.”
Simon caught on right away. He crouched down and asked gently, “Hey, Chunky, can you help us figure out where that sound is coming from?”
Chunky instantly perked up, puffing out its chest. “Leave it to me. My ears are top-of-the-line.”
