Snatching the pocket watch with lightning speed, Renata lied through her teeth. "This is mine!"
Seeing how desperate she was to claim it, Queenie became even more convinced that the watch hid a dark secret.
"Dr. Whitlock, that is clearly my watch. How did it magically become yours?"
Queenie's tone was sharp and unyielding. "If you're going to insist that watch is yours, why don't we verify it right here in Mr. Zimmer's office? There is a memory card inside this watch. Let's take it out and see whether the contents belong to you or me."
The hand Renata used to grip the watch visibly trembled with anxiety.
Her mounting panic only confirmed Queenie's suspicions.
But she was, after all, a student of psychology. After the initial wave of terror, Renata quickly managed to steady herself.
If there really was something on that watch, Queenie would have pulled it out in front of the Calvert family last night.
Why wait until now?
She was just bluffing!
Still, she couldn't be one hundred percent sure the watch was empty, and with that uncertainty hanging over her, she didn't dare call the bluff.
Forcing herself to look calm, she handed the watch back to Queenie. "My apologies. I looked at it wrong. I have a watch that looks exactly like this."
Queenie's lips curled into a mocking smirk. She took the watch and walked away without looking back.
Zander and Renata followed right behind her.
Once the office was finally quiet, Stanley lifted his dark, brooding eyes and glared at Miles.
"Did you see that? That's the so-called loving couple you were talking about?"
Miles muttered defensively, "...So what if they aren't loving? Are you planning to steal another man's wife, Mr. Zimmer?"
Stanley closed his eyes and pinched the bridge of his nose, feeling a massive headache coming on from the sheer anger.
Having successfully dodged a massive bullet, Zander was in fantastic spirits as they exited Aurélle.
He glanced at the woman beside him, noticing she looked deeply troubled.
Guilt washed over him. "Renata, I'm so sorry. Mr. Zimmer took his anger out on you today because of me. I dragged you into this."
