Queenie turned her head and saw her mother-in-law, Lianne, walking in with the support of a nanny.
She immediately let go of Renata, wiped the cold fury from her face, and slipped right back into her usual gentle demeanor.
"Lianne, you're back."
The reason Queenie hadn't made a massive scene before finalizing the divorce was partly to secure the papers quietly and land a fatal blow on the cheating pair later. The other reason was Lianne.
In the three years Queenie had been married into the family, Lianne had treated her incredibly well, loving her like her own daughter.
Because of Zander's condition, Lianne always carried a deep sense of guilt toward her daughter-in-law. She had warned Zander countless times never to let Queenie suffer. The family already owed her too much, and he needed to cherish her even more.
Two months ago, Lianne was diagnosed with mid-to-late-stage lung cancer. Her surgery was scheduled for the end of the month. If she found out about all this filth right now, the shock could be devastating.
Queenie refused to add to her burden. She wanted Lianne to get through the surgery smoothly. Once she was past the danger zone, learning about the divorce wouldn't take such a severe toll on her health.
"Queenie, were you and Dr. Whitlock..."
Lianne looked at her daughter-in-law in confusion. She had been in the hospital for pre-surgery treatments the past two days, so she had no idea if some conflict had flared up between them.
"It's nothing. We were just joking around."
Renata had slipped back into her room the moment Lianne walked in, so Lianne hadn't seen the glaring red handprints on her face.
Queenie brushed it off smoothly, and Lianne didn't press the issue. She was still feeling incredibly weak from the hospital treatments. She simply didn't have the energy to dig into it.
Queenie gently helped her to her room. "Lianne, are you feeling nauseous? Are you hungry? Do you want me to have the staff make you something to eat?"
"No, I don't have an appetite. I just want to sleep for a bit." Seeing the worry etched on her daughter-in-law's face, Lianne patted her hand. "I only have one round of treatment left. Don't worry."
"Okay. Get some rest."
After making sure Lianne was settled, Queenie headed upstairs to her own bedroom. She collapsed onto the sofa, utterly drained.
