And now he was using her job to threaten her. He knew exactly how to keep her in line.
The words Jocelyn wanted to scream were trapped in her throat. She couldn't spit them out, but swallowing them down tasted bitter.
Seeing her dilemma, Queenie quickly stepped in to defuse the tension. "It's okay, Jocelyn. It's probably not appropriate for me to tag along anyway. I'll head over there myself later. You go ahead and focus on your work with Mr. Zimmer."
She spoke with complete understanding.
But internally, she was cursing the 'assistant' to high heaven.
Just yesterday, Mr. Zimmer had been approachable and easy to talk to. Now, he was suddenly cold and dismissive.
Someone had clearly been whispering in his ear.
She shouldn't have trusted that jerk in the first place. He promised to keep her secret and then turned right around and threw her under the bus.
Men were all liars!
Miles puffed out his chest and strutted out the door. Jocelyn trailed behind him, pouting as she tried to reassure Queenie. "Queenie, I'll do everything I can to bring those roses back for you. Don't worry."
"Alright, thank you. Go on ahead."
Left on her own, Queenie had to figure out a backup plan.
She couldn't pin all her hopes on Jocelyn.
Showing up uninvited at the Austin Manor meant they might refuse to see her altogether.
But she had come all this way. Regardless of the outcome, she had to try.
She hailed a cab and headed straight for the estate.
On the ride over, she searched her phone for other local nurseries in the UK. If she absolutely couldn't get the Juliet Rose, she needed a secondary option.
By the time the cab pulled up to the destination, dark clouds had rolled in. A storm was brewing.
The estate was a sprawling, independent manor. As Queenie approached the gates, she spotted a British guard sitting in the security booth.
She spoke politely, "Hello, I was hoping to request a meeting with Mr. Robert Austin. Could you please let him know I'm here?"
The guard gave her a disinterested glance. "Mr. Austin is currently meeting with important guests. He is unavailable."
"I can wait until his meeting is finished."
