When the limousine door opened, Maddox stepped out first, then turned, offering me his hand. My fingers slipped into his and we firmly held hands while he led the way.
Even before we got to the red carpet, a few camera flashes were going off as those photographers shouted his name over and over again.
When we finally stepped onto the red carpet, every camera now shifted and it was almost blinding as one flash came after another.
“Maddox! Over here!”
“Show us that dress, Harper!”
We began to move along the red carpet until the host approached us. “Well, don’t you two look incredible this evening!” she said into the microphone.
Maddox gave an effortless smile, then smoothly said, “You look just as incredible.”
She laughed and shimmied her shoulders slightly at the compliment. “One of the most nominated of the night. How does that feel?”
I glanced at his side profile as he spoke and for a second, I forgot everything else. That was his moment.
“It feels earned,” he said with a bright smile. “I’ve taken risks that didn’t always look smart in the beginning. To see them recognized like this means everything to me. But I have to mention that I didn’t do this alone. I’ve had the right people beside me.”
He brushed his thumb against my hand as he said that and the cameras captured it. I smiled and nodded, playing my role.
But then, my attention shifted. Up ahead, Grayson had Tiffany by his side, both of them dressed in beige. They were waving and laughing, holding hands like they were still deeply in love. It almost looked convincing.
He kept smiling for the cameras until he casually glanced around and the moment he saw me, the smile changed to something less performative. His eyes slowly scanned every detail of my dress, but I quickly looked away. So what if he was looking? It meant nothing to me.
After the interview wrapped up, Maddox guided me forward. We both knew what was coming because there was no way around it. We were going to have to take photos with Grayson and Tiffany as they were right there.
When we approached them, I barely looked at Grayson, even though he was right there.
Tiffany switched positions and stood next to Maddox on the far left, leaving me between him and Grayson, who was on my right side. He stood closer than necessary when we lined up for the photos and I could feel the weight of his gaze again. I ended up glancing at him and there was that subtle lip bite as he took in my outfit again.
Then, his expression changed quickly when his eyes moved to Maddox.
I followed his gaze and found Maddox glaring. It wasn’t too obvious, but just enough to send a warning to him.
I couldn’t help it, so I let out a small laugh.
Grayson had always been intimidated by Maddox no matter how much he pretended.

The photographers called for different poses until they requested Tiffany and I to step aside so they could capture Maddox and Grayson as they were the nominees.
We stepped aside and the two of them smiled for the cameras, looking like allies, but their mouths were moving. They were whispering to each other. I tried to read their lips, but I couldn’t make it out. I hated the way I was curious.
Before I could analyze it any further, Tiffany moved closer to me than she already was.
“These awards used to be just for the corporate world. Now they just let anyone in.”
I glanced at her, completely unfazed because I had heard worse from her.
“I’m not just anyone,” I replied calmly. “I’m here to see my man get up from his seat and head to that stage more than yours.”
Her confidence faded slightly and she didn’t even try to argue with me about it because she knew the truth. She just looked away, poking her cheek.
After the photos wrapped up, Maddox immediately extended his hand towards me and I took it with no hesitation. I didn’t even take one last glance at Grayson.
Our fingers intertwined once again and we headed towards the stairs that led to the entrance of the building.
Inside the lobby, the glamor only seemed to intensify as I got to see different types of designer dresses and suits.
It was all such a beautiful sight to take in until I saw Juliet and Claire. They were standing near the staircase, their dresses stunning but a bit too seductive for such an event. They both had high slits, low neck lines and fabric hugging every curve like that was the intention.
They were both staring right at Maddox and I couldn’t tell if they smiled because they were glad to see him, or it was because they wanted him to look at them.
I immediately turned my head towards him and found that he looked genuinely surprised.
“Babe,” he said quickly. “I had no idea they’d be here. I didn’t even know that Juliet was in town.”
I was about to pull my hand away from his when I studied his face for a few seconds. I believed that he wasn’t lying to me at that moment and that put me at ease just a little bit. I wasn’t going to let those two get to me.
Maddox
I was still holding Harper’s hand when we stepped into the grand hall I didn’t even get to fully appreciate the decor as I was thinking about Juhet and Claire How did they end up here? When did Juliet come to town!
Telling myself to stop thinking about it. I focused on that moment and how Harper commented on everything she could lee. I could tell she wasn’t too pleased that the two of them had come, but there was nothing she could do about it
The crystal chandeliers from above looked like constellations and she constantly looked up as she had never seen anything like that before That gave rise to some amusement in her facial expression and tone
led her straight to the section of the nominees, looking around at the tables to read the gukles nameplates
She was the first to spot our names and we stopped night at that table, but before we could even sit. I saw the change in her expression, like she was a little disappointed. She was looking night at the other nameplate. It had Grayson and tiany’s
names on it.

Not only were we going to sit with them at the same table, our suites for the night in the hotel were right next to each other, courtesy of the event organizers.
Pulling out a chair for her, she sat down gracefully, still looking at the other nameplate.
With a deep exhale, she placed her purse right beside the centerpiece, which was a cascade of white orchids.
Grayson and Tiffany hadn’t yet arrived, so she kept looking at the entrance as we were facing it. She must have wanted to get it over with as soon as possible and build a tolerance to their presence at the same table.
I believed it would take them a while to arrive as they were probably still shaking hands with whoever came their way.
She was looking at the orchestra playing softly near the stage when I gently nudged her shoulder.
She looked at me with curiosity and I gestured towards the entrance.
“Check it out,” I said.
She followed my gaze and I saw the amusement come back to her face. Zoey and Aiden walked in first while holding hands and laughing about something.
But behind them, Ella and Adrian followed and it was very different between them. She walked a step ahead, but he just watched her like she was the only person in the room.
It didn’t take long for them to spot us and Harper instantly waved at them, a genuine smile spreading across her lips.
Zoey excitedly waved back, Aiden just nodding with a smile.
