The after party felt different as the chandeliers were dimmer now and the music was louder.

Everyone was still elegant, but loosened up a little bit. Even the laughter was less controlled.nIt was no longer about posing for the cameras, but just time to have a good time.
I should’ve been enjoying myself, but Tiffany was beside me. She wasn’t too close, but that still bothered me. There was a deliberate gap between us, which was just enough to make it clear to each other that we weren’t friends. I hated being that close to her. I was never going to forgive her for tricking me into thinking I was going to meet my sister, only to find out it was her.
We were only sitting next to each other for appearances. That was why I didn’t even look at her instead.
I focused on the left side, where my friends were. Zoey placed her head on Aiden’s chest, his arm resting over her shoulder. They were so comfortable with each other as they whispered.
And then there was Ella and Adrian who were right next to them. The difference was quite clear as there was no contact between them. She faced forward most of the time, focusing on her drink.
Even with all that, he watched her like she was the only thing in the room that mattered. He didn’t seem bothered by the distance, as long as she was sitting right there next to him.
When I heard familiar laughter, I glanced across the room and spotted Maddox. He was speaking with an elderly couple, his father standing proudly beside him as he added a word here and there.
After all the awards he had scooped, he looked untouchable, like he belonged at the center of every room.
Eventually, he was able to get away and for one hopeful second, it looked like he was coming back to the table. I just wanted him to finally be available so he could tell me the truth as I had been waiting for hours.
But then, Juliet and Claire appeared at the same time. They intercepted him before he could come any further towards me and it made my stomach twist. I couldn’t hear what they were saying from where I was, but I saw Claire touch his arm while Juliet smirked at him as she said something. He didn’t look amused, but he wasn’t walking away either. I hated how much that mattered.
While sipping her orange juice, Tiffany moved closer beside me so she could close the gap between us. “Hmm, think they’re talking about having a threesome afterwards?”
Her tone was playful and full of mockery, but I didn’t respond or even look in her direction. Instead, I glanced over at my friends and they seemed just as pissed.
I looked back at the scene that was already hurting me so badly and a part of me wanted to look away, but I needed to see how he was going to react. That was what mattered. He had stood up for me earlier, but what about that moment?
Just when it looked like he was about to move past them, they hooked their arms around his on each side, like it was a harmless joke.
Then, they started walking, leading him in the opposite direction and that made my blood boil. He was just going with
them.
The room began to feel smaller and my vision blurred slightly at the edges. I could feel the tears coming on.
Tiffany laughed softly. “I guess he just couldn’t resist those beautiful ladies. He’s had them before, so why not do it again?”

My jaw clenched as I closed my eyes. I refused to cry right there, not in front of her or anyone else. But my heart ached as I wondered why he had gone with them.
I blinked hard as I stared at the ceiling, feeling the tears going away after a few seconds.
Fully composing myself, I poured myself a drink.
I was about to bring it to my lips when I paused at the sight of Maddox when he stopped walking abruptly. He forcefully pulled his arms free and it was enough to make a few of those nearby turn their heads. He didn’t even care.
Juliet and Claire stumbled a little bit, but he didn’t even wait. I couldn’t hear what he said to them, but his expression was cold. Whatever it was, it wasn’t flirtation. It was a warning.
Both of them instantly lost their confidence along with their smiles. They looked at each other like they had just realized they were about to face some heavy consequences.
Then, he walked away from them and began heading straight towards me.
I glanced at Tiffany and as expected, she was no longer amused.
It put me a little at ease that Maddox didn’t go with Juliet and Claire, but it wasn’t over yet.
I sighed with relief, my eyes never leaving his figure just to make sure he would reach our table.
When he was close enough, he directly stopped in front of me as his eyes locked on mine.
Holding out his hand, he said, “Babe, let’s go.”
I didn’t even hesitate to go with him. I needed to talk to him anyway, so I took his hand, his grip firm and possessive.
As we moved through the crowd, people constantly stopped him to congratulate him. He smiled politely and I forced myself to smile beside him, even though my heart was still racing and I was getting impatient.

I spotted Maddox and Harper before they could notice me. That was just around the corner in one of the hallways.
They were walking fast, their voices low but tense.
She even pulled her hand away from his grip and the sight of that was so satisfying to me because the moment I’d been waiting for had arrived. All my careful planning had finally paid off.
I followed them immediately, staying just far enough behind to remain unseen. Every step and turn they took. I mirrored at a distance. My heart raced, but it was with excitement. Victory felt so close that I could almost taste it.
They left the building through the back door and I stopped a few steps back, just enough to be able to see them at a distance while they were outside.
I couldn’t hear exactly what they were talking about, but I understood a lot just by the way Harper’s hands gestured frantically and Maddox’s arms were partly raised as if trying to calm her down. The argument was unmistakable. Every th of her head felt like another step towards her walking away from him and finally, towards me.
I clenched my fist with victory and believed that the next thing to happen was her slapping him hard. I was almost smiling before it even happened.
