I sat there, waiting for the front door to open and I told myself any second now, but it didn’t happen. I could already feel Maddox’s eyes on me, like he had been thinking the same thing and that was when I turned to face him.

Do you think Anna didn’t hear the engine?

He scoffed while shaking his head. I’m certain she heard it. There must be something more important going on inside.

I thoughtfully furrowed my eyebrows as I looked back at the front door, wondering what it could be.

It was only when he unbuckled his seatbelt that I paid attention to him.

There’s only one way to find out what’s going on inside,he said, already reaching for the door handle.

I unbuckled my seatbelt as he walked over to the other side, my heart racing a little as it still bothered me that it was so quiet.

He opened the door for me and I stepped out, wanting to head inside right away, but I had to wait for him to remove the shopping bags from the backseat. My eyes switched backandforth between the front door and his movement, like the faster he would get everything, the faster I would get to find out what was going on.

Despite the amount of bags he had to carry with him in one hand, it didn’t look like it bothered him much. To me, they were heavy and I would’ve carried them in both hands. I smiled a little at the way he looked at that moment and that served as a brief distraction for me and my worry about what was going on with my sister.

With his phone in one hand and the bags in the other, I walked past him so I could get to the door first. I held onto the doorknob, twisted it and pushed, raising my eyebrows at how the door was unlocked. I even looked back at him, wondering what I would find inside.

I walked in and it was so quiet that my first thought was that she was gone again. I even expected to find a note on the table or something but there was nothing.

Maddox walked in behind me and asked where he could put the bags, but I didn’t even respond because I grew more

nervous.

When I rushed to the kitchen, I found a mug and plate on the table with some bread crumbs and it was then that I sighed with relief.

He came up behind me, wrapping his arm around me for comfort. She’s home.

I chuckled, placing my hand on top of his wrist. Yeah. She must be upstairs.

As soon as I said that, his phone began to ring and it was the perfect moment for me to excuse myself.

I walked up the stairs, faster than I usually did, my heart racing just as fast as when I had first walked into the house, but it was now because of anticipation to see her.

I pushed open the bedroom door and found her laying on the couch and flinched a little when I saw her green face. I then placed a hand on my chest because it was just an avocado mask. She hadn’t even heard me come in as she had earphones plugged in. She wasn’t even aware that I was standing right in front of her as she had cucumber slices covering her eyes.

And then there were rollers in her hair that made me wonder what was going on with her

Wanting to get her attention, I tapped her foot and she flinched, pulling her leg back then sitting up so fast that she dropped her phone and the earphones dropped to the floor as well since they were still plugged in.

Who’s there?she said as she got up quickly, clenched her fists like she was ready to throw a punch.

I panicked so hard that I had to announce who I was quickly. It’s me!

She instantly unclenched her fists and dropped her hands. Harper?

I could imagine her trying to smile at that moment, but the mask had already dried up. I could still tell that she was relieved that I wasn’t an intruder.

Taking off the cucumber slices to see me, she chuckled. I didn’t know you were home.

Hmm, I wonder why,I said, picking up her phone and earphones.

She rolled her eyes as I handed them back to her.

Thanks, I’m hoping you didn’t come back pregnant.
