Chapter 84 Lines Crossed

Hadn’t she just tried to stop Fraser earlier?

But instead of backing down, the two men had fixated on each other’s family names, neither willing to yield. Fraser, completely riled up, had even balled his hand into a fist-just one step away from punching Jack.

Now, thanks to the subtle way Elowyn framed things, everyone was looking at Elina with blame in their eyes.

She could accept that Jack always took Elowyn’s side. But Fraser-he’d just said he wanted to protect her, and now even he seemed to be siding with Elowyn. Elina felt a creeping wave of regret for once again letting herself believe something that had never been true.

“You can’t say that,” Elowyn spoke up with an air of indignation, though her heart swelled with satisfaction. “I was in the car earlier and I heard it-Fraser was the one about to start a fight with Jack.”

She put on a brave, wronged expression, hiding the glee bubbling inside.

She hadn’t gotten out of the car earlier precisely because she was afraid Fraser would see her with Jack.

But now was the perfect moment to reveal herself—at Jack’s side but not too close, just enough to make a point in front of Fraser.

And of course, Fraser was still so easy to manipulate. A few words and he was already shifting his view of Elina-and warming to her.

It didn’t matter whether it was Jack, Fraser, or even their parents. If it belonged to Elina, Elowyn wanted it. And more.

Elina shot her a cold glance but said nothing. She turned to Fraser.

“If the yelling’s over, then let’s leave it at that.”

Without waiting for a reply, she turned and walked away, swift and decisive.

Fraser looked once at Jack, then followed after her.

Seeing them leave, Jack felt his temper rise.

He didn’t want any man near Elina-especially not Fraser-and found himself taking a step as if to follow.

But Elowyn moved quickly to block his path.

“Jack, the meeting starts in thirty minutes. We don’t have much time left.”

It should’ve been Howard reminding him, but Elowyn knew Jack’s schedule well-beating Howard to it.

Jack frowned, watching the two disappear into the car. His eyes were like ice.

He didn’t say a word as he finally turned and got into the car.

No one had expected to run into Elina and Fraser like this today.

Back in the car, Jack rubbed the bridge of his nose in irritation.

“Jack, is your head hurting again? Want me to massage it?”

He didn’t object, so Elowyn leaned in and began gently pressing his temples.

“Elina and Fraser were always close when we were kids-like childhood sweethearts. They used to leave me behind all the time. It’s not surprising she spoke up for him just now. Jack, don’t be upset.”

The warmth of the car wrapped around them, her soft voice filling the space.

Jack’s eyes suddenly snapped open. “They were that close?”

“Of course,” she said, her tone innocent and sweet, unaware-or pretending not to notice-how dark his expression had become. “Everyone in our family knew how close Elina and Fraser

were.”

He frowned and grabbed her wrist, pushing her hand away.

“That’s enough.”

His clipped tone made it clear-he was seething inside.

Elowyn quickly shook her head, covering her mouth with a look of concern. “Jack, I didn’t mean it like that. I’m sure Elina and Fraser are just friends. There’s nothing between them…”

But the more she explained, the muddier her words became.

Jack’s face turned cold. “Don’t mention her again.”

The distaste in his voice was unmistakable. Elowyn nodded, turning back in her seat, hiding the satisfied smile tugging at the corners of her mouth.
