It Was Silas?
All that time, Silas thought Noelle and Brian had married willingly, and that Benson was hers and Brian’s.
It never once crossed his mind that whatever happened between him and Noelle would bear fruit. After all, Noelle and Brian had been together for a long time.
But what Serena told Silas awakened him.
Silas tried to recall the night it happened.
The man he bumped into and swapped keycards with was certainly not Brian. So what did that mean? Was Brian trying to screw Noelle over with a stranger? But if that was the case, why did he take responsibility?
Thinking back to when he left Noelle to alert the hotel management, Silas wondered, 'Is it possible that Brian and Noelle made love in that very brief amount of time? Is that why he took responsibility?'
But that did not make sense. Wouldn’t Brian have caught Noelle in an awkward situation instead?
Silas imagined Brian knocking on the door and finding her wrapped in a blanket. The crumpled sheets and her clothes on the sofa would have been enough to tell the story of what had happened that night.
He did not want to jump to conclusions, but at the same time, he no longer wanted to keep Noelle in the dark.
The possibility that he got Noelle pregnant would also explain why Brian would dare swap the baby with Gwen’s, if that’s what truly happened.
“Silas, what are you talking about?” Noelle asked.
He couldn’t see her expression, but he felt her body stiffen through his actions.
“What are you apologizing for? None of this is your fault,” Noelle inquired.
Finally, Silas looked up at Noelle. When she saw his tears, she wiped them with her trembling fingers. She asked, “Silas, what’s going on? You are scaring me.”
“Let me ask you,” Silas said softly. “Serena told me you and Brian got married because he took responsibility?”
Noelle’s face reddened. She looked away and admitted, “Yes, it happened seven years ago. I got really drunk. It was the last day of the AI conference Brian and I attended. Everyone went to the hotel bar and passed around wine and beer. I felt strange all of a sudden, like I was burning.”
“Before I could tell Brian, he said he had to take a call, but he took so long,” Noelle said. “Everyone assumed he had gone up to our room. We had shared the same room for the conference because the hotel was fully booked.”
“I was feeling really strange—hot—”
“You felt… restless,” Silas filled in for her.
“Yeah, exactly,” the color of Noelle’s cheeks turned a shade darker.
“Go on,” Silas encouraged. “Don’t hesitate. I want to understand everything.”
“I did not want to humiliate Brian, so I decided to head up. I texted him, though he did not answer,” Noelle said, looking down at her hands. “By the time I got into the elevator, everything was really blurry. I did not know how I made it to our room, but I’m glad I did.”
She paused, frowning. “But now I regret it. Because we obviously made love for the first time, and we had a son—a son he chose to abandon?”
Noelle became teary-eyed.
“Will you tell me what happened the morning you woke up?” Silas asked, his voice shaking a little.
