The Lies Behind Her Marriage novel Chapter 229

The Nurse's Confession.

Serena completely felt Noelle’s anxiety. To know that you have a child out there was heartbreaking.

“We already have a list of the medical staff on duty when you gave birth,” Silas shared. “We’ll start with the previous hospital director and the doctors and nurses involved. Then we’ll look into their financial records. In cases like this, there’s usually bribery somewhere.”

“I’ll continue to look into our mystery man. Assuming we are correct, and he is the same employee that resigned years ago, we have a name,” Nathaniel said. “Ricardo Silva. My people were able to track him down. He happens to be working in Velmon—my city. I’ll fly out to Velmon tonight, and my men and I should have a late-night talk with him in a few hours.”

“Milo will be the one to go into police records for abandoned children or babies, plus continue looking into orphanages,” Silas continued.

“Xavier and I will manage the company so you can focus on finding your son, Silas,” Serena said.

Silas nodded. “Dad also promised to come by tomorrow.”

VanderMed Technology had recently come through a difficult crisis following Melvin’s arrest. It couldn’t be left without a leader.

“Thank you,” Noelle softly said. “I appreciate you sacrificing your time, Serena, Nathan.”

Serena smiled back. She reached for Noelle’s hand and said, “We are family, of course. You are going to be my sister-in-law. It’s only natural for Nathan and me to help you.”

“Yes, I’ll be your brother-in-law soon. Of course, I will do anything to help you and Silas,” Nathaniel said confidently. His lips curved up slightly.

Silas then nodded in Nathaniel’s direction, adding, “Thank you, brother-in-law.”

Serena, “…”

Somehow, Silas and Nathaniel had already decided to become brothers-in-law after everything that happened with Melvin. Those late nights working together to bring her family to justice must have forged a bond between them.

They had clearly skipped Serena’s opinion in the process. Still, this wasn’t the right moment for her to bring up her relationship status.

Silas’s son did, in fact, come first.

Serena reached for the medical report and pointed it out. “It says here that your son has a pigmented birthmark on his right shoulder. Actually, Silas has this too.”

“Let me see that. I was in such a hurry after learning Gwen gave birth at the hospital, I must have missed this,” Silas muttered, reading the file about his son.

Then he took off his coat and shirt, leaving only his tank top. He revealed a brownish birthmark shaped somewhat like a seahorse.

“I think that is unique in itself,” Serena commented.

“Yes,” Noelle said, looking hopeful. “I sure hope my son has the same birthmark, but there’s another indicator.”

Noelle took a deep breath. “I have type AB blood. Benson has type A, but that medical record says my son has type B.”

But morning came, and they had to pause.

They first met with doctors and medical staff who had been working at St. Mary’s Hospital six years ago. The doctors did not seem to know anything and were very willing to cooperate. However, it was a different case with the previous hospital director and one particular retired nurse.

Confronted with the information that they may have been involved in tampering with a wealthy heir’s son, the previous director admitted, “Look, I did not know what Mr. Kingsley was planning. He only paid me to make sure Nurse Miranda’s work shift was approved. I swear, that is my only involvement.”

The nurse involved was enjoying her retirement in a vacation home outside Rexam. Upon Silas and Noelle’s visit, Miranda caved. Her lips trembled as she knelt before Silas.

“Sir… Mr. Vander. I had no idea the baby was your son.” The nurse motioned to Noelle. “Miss Porter told me that she was trying to trick Mr. Kingsley into believing the son was his. Weren’t they married? I thought I was giving Mr. Kingsley and Miss Porter justice.”

“At the same time, you were guaranteed a handsome retirement,” Silas said angrily. The soldiers with him surrounded Miranda and her family. “Regardless of the circumstances, it was not your place to intervene and separate a child from his mother!”

Noelle saw how Silas nearly lost it.

He almost forgot that Miranda was already an old woman in her sixties.

Silas slammed both his fists on the table, breaking it and barked, “Tell me everything you know—and you must not alert Brian and Gwen! If you don’t cooperate, you’ll be the one answering for everything.”

“The choice is yours.”
