Not Your Mother.
“Mom, who is he?” Theo asked, pointing at Benson.
Noelle turned to her son and cupped his cheek. Softly, she answered, “No one important.”
She glanced at Milo, instructing him, “Take him.”
After Milo took Theo’s hand, Noelle said to her son, “I’ll be with you in a minute, honey. Wait for Mom.”
As much as she wanted to slap Gwen with the truth, it wasn’t the right time. She and Silas had focused their attention on Theo over the past few days, which prevented them from following up on the criminal case against Gwen and Brian.
“Mom! Answer me!” Benson demanded.
Clearly, he was already well.
Judging by the way Benson no longer had his patient identification wristband, he had just been discharged.
“Didn’t you want Gwen to be your mom? Stop calling me your mother.” Her eyes grew colder. “I’m not your mother!”
Gwen gasped and pulled Benson to her side. She pointed at Noelle. “How could you? How could you do this to your own son?”
“Did you all see that? Did you see how this woman treated her own son?” Gwen began calling the attention of nurses and other passersby. Then she turned to Noelle. “Noelle, you'd better stop this nonsense. While your son was in the hospital for asthma, you were out, doing God knows what!”
“Yes, Mom, how could you?” Benson shrieked. “You always take care of me when I’m sick!”
“So you want me to take care of you when you are sick, but cling to your father’s mistress when you are well?” Noelle shot back. “You know, Benson, maybe you are not my real son at all.”
Noelle folded her arms and added, “I’ve always wondered why you look nothing like me—not even a little bit.”
While Benson was confused, Gwen’s eyes widened. She said, “What are you talking about, Noelle? Of course, he is your son!”
The people around them began whispering, throwing daggers with their eyes at Gwen.
No one would ever love a mistress, and Noelle was glad to call her that.
“I’m already divorcing Brian, and since you, the mistress, love to play mother and wife, then I’m happy to relinquish that throne,” Noelle snapped. “You can have it!”
“You can be Benson’s mom! You both look alike, anyway!”
Noelle’s eyes narrowed at Benson as she set the record straight. “I’ll give my love to someone who deserves it more.”
For a second, she caught the panic in Gwen’s eyes, but Noelle did not have time to deal with her.
A glint of mischief flashed in her eyes.
It wasn’t like her to be this vengeful, but the plan was very satisfying.
Brian and Gwen’s social circle mostly believed they were a golden couple. Not many knew Brian was married to her.
Serving them a warrant for what they did to Theo was one thing, but it would be far more enjoyable to let everyone know that Gwen was only ever… a kept woman.
“Okay,” Noelle said, looking up at Silas. “I agree to your plan.”
But before that day came, there was a small bump on the road to Noelle’s revenge. She received a call from Brian’s parents later that afternoon.
“Noelle, we heard you are requesting a divorce. Can we speak to you about it?” Brian’s father, Edward Kingsley, said on the phone.
After Noelle’s parents died, Brian’s parents had become her second family. They respected her. They loved her as their own.
And now, as her plan for vengeance quietly unfolded, one thought lingered: they would be among the ones she would hurt the most.
How was she going to break their hearts?
Would they stand with Brian… or stand for what was right?
