During the after-party, Alice and Xavier celebrated a new chapter of Serena’s life.
“Pregnant,” Alice echoed, placing a hand dramatically on her chest. “Nathan really made up for lost time.”
Serena pointed straight at Nathaniel. “He keeps seducing.”
Xavier shook his head while Alice burst into laughter. “I’m pretty sure getting pregnant isn’t a two-day decision. Right, Noelle?”
Noelle, who had been peacefully drinking her wine, immediately choked.
She coughed once, twice, then waved her hand.
“Yes—well—technically, it involves two people enthusiastically participating before the actual baby part,” she managed, her face turning red. “I would know.”
Silas had a self-satisfied look on his face. Only then did Serena react.
“Well, I knew that,” Serena snorted. “I just didn’t expect Nathan to be this efficient. We were married for four years before I got pregnant."
She looked at Nathaniel. “Should I be impressed or concerned?”
This time, it was Nathaniel’s turn to look smug. He answered, “Love, you should be impressed.”
Landon, Alice’s brother, happened to sit with them. He laughed and said, “I wonder who will be the impressive fella who will finally knock my sister up so she can have a family of her own.”
“Shut up!” Alice shot back at her brother. “Just because you already have a girlfriend, you are being cocky.”
Landon just laughed. Just like Alice, he had a sharp, well-defined face with black hair. His good looks easily landed him a girlfriend at his new workplace.
“So, when’s the wedding gonna be?” Alice asked Serena.
“We are planning that this week,” Nathaniel answered. “We are meeting the wedding planner.”
“Are you and Silas going to hold your wedding at the same time?” Xavier laughed.
Silas shook his head. “I want my sister’s wedding to be special.” He took Noelle’s hand, adding, “And Noelle deserves her own special wedding too.”
“Aww,” Serena and Alice both said at the same time.
“I can’t wait to be my best friend’s maid of honor for the second time,” Alice beamed. Then she frowned. “Being married to the same man twice?”
Alice must have looked displeased because Nathaniel's eyes narrowed.
By the time they called it a night, it was already two in the morning.
Xavier proposed that Alice stay at his penthouse, and she agreed. It was too late to return to her parents' house.
They could barely walk a straight line when they made it to Xavier’s home. But while they were at it, the heat was on with Joan and her boyfriend. They were so touchy, and they were throwing suggestive words around that Alice herself felt aroused.
The moment they made it inside the penthouse and Xavier pointed to their assigned room, Joan and her boyfriend rushed in like the door was the only thing standing between them and bad decisions.
“Did you just see that? Someone is going to make a whole lot of noise here,” Alice said, laughing.
“Whoa!” She almost fell, feeling a bit lightheaded.
Good thing Xavier caught her, but that touch sent a rush through her, and she flushed.
“I got you,” he said, laughing softly. The laugh lines on his face became evident. “Careful… you’re getting dangerously cute when you blush like that.”
Alice, “...”
“I was ashamed because I slipped,” she defended herself.
