Chapter 111
As Massimo’s lawyer finished speaking, everyone in the court fell silent. Elena couldn’t blame anyone–the idea that the Mafia King hadn’t tried to kill her but save her was something no one would ordinarily expect.
“Think about,” Mr. Barbieri continued. “Really think about it! You’re surrounded in a room of over a hundred people, all of them calling for one woman’s head!”
Mr. Barbieri very carefully paced across the floor, staying far away from Massimo himself.
“If you protest the game of deadly chance, there’s plenty of men who can shut you up and make sure the game is played. But if you remove the deadly bullet and fill the gun with only blanks, then the problem is solved, isn’t it?” Mr. Barbieri asked. “It’s the only non–violent way anyone could fully prevent murder from happening!”
Elena thought back to that moment on the cruise when Massimo handed her the gun. She recalled how calm Massimo had been. She had assumed he was just being his usual cold self, but maybe he could only be that calm because he knew there was no chance of Elena dying.
It also wouldn’t be the first time Massimo rigged a game of chance for Elena.
“Gambling isn’t about playing fair—it’s about winning and losing. Those who don’t have the guts or skills to win deserve to lose.”
Massimo had said those very words to her after her first game of poker. And Russian Roulette, despite its more deadly stakes, was still a game of chance. It was still a form of gambling, wasn’t it?
There was only one way to be sure. Elena looked over at Massimo. She waited for him to meet her gaze.
When he finally did, she saw the truth reflected in them. Elena was certain that the theory Mr. Barbieri was proposing to the court really did happen.
The trial wasn’t over at that moment. There were still plenty of days full of presenting evidence and the two lawyers arguing with each other. But after Mr. Barbieri had made his statement, the case was practically won.
Even Elena could tell that no one in the courtroom was treating Massimo like a dangerous, ruthless criminal anymore. He was being treated as a clever savior.
It wasn’t a surprise then when the judge finally delivered his verdict—not guilty on all counts.
Elena wanted to run and congratulate Massimo right then and there, but he was already being swarmed by reporters. So instead she went with Luca back to the Ferraro estate.
After all, Massimo would still need to sign a bunch of paperwork with the local police and settle things with his lawyer. And Luca and Elena had a celebratory dinner party to set up!
Only Elena had never set up a party herself before. There were the few times Aria hosted a birthday party or graduation dinner on Elena’s behalf, but Elena herself had never done it herself. It was impossible to do so while living under her parents‘ roof.
Elena wasn’t sure what they needed. What decorations were essential? And what about food?
Before she could fully spiral into self–doubt, someone entered the estate.
“Massimo!” Elena cried in surprise. “Shouldn’t you still be at the courthouse for another hour?”
“My lawyer’s taking care of it,” Massimo replied. “And it’s a good thing, too, considering this place isn’t even remotely set up for a proper celebration.”

Elena fondly rolled her eyes. “Care to show me how it’s done?”
Luca left to get a real feast–seafood from some five star restaurant–which left Elena and Massimo to decorate by themselves. Though Massimo scoffed at the giant “Congrats!” balloons Elena had picked up, he still held the ladder as Elena hung all of them up.
“We’re not using these cheap plastic table settings,” Massimo insisted. “I have proper table clothes and fine china.
“That’s the point,” Elena shot back. “Parties are supposed to be different from your everyday life. You always use the fancy stuff, so let’s do something different and fun!”
Massimo snorted. “That’s ridiculous. And even if it wasn’t, I own more than one type of table cloth.”
“Do you have a plastic one in an obnoxiously shiny gold color?”
