“It’s a little hard to believe that the girl who was so worried about her curfew now works for the Mafia King,” Joshua continued.

Elena sighed. “Does everything with you circle back to work?”

“I’m just worried about you,” Joshua said softly. It was hard to doubt his sincerity.

“I don’t plan to work for the mafia forever,” Elena admitted. “Especially with… well, everything going on lately, I definitely don’t feel safe or trust them either.”

Joshua nodded. “That’s good at least. You really can’t be too careful with your safety–if you ever need help, talk to the police.”

Elena scoffed. “You can’t honestly believe that the police don’t have their own problems.”

“They aren’t as bad as the mafia,” Joshua countered. “If you’re worried about getting charged for Massimo’s crimes, I can make sure you get a good deal from any prosecutor.”

“Like how you cut good deals for those mafia women?” Elena accused.

“I don’t understand what you mean.”

“They would never have gotten on that stand otherwise.”

“I didn’t cut any deals with them,” Joshua insisted. “I promise you, Elena, I didn’t.”

“Someone did,” Elena insisted. “Someone from the police threatened to sue or press charges against their father, or son, or lover. You can’t believe otherwise, Joshua.”

“I trust the people I work with,” he defended. “They’re good people.”

“So is Massimo,” Elena declared. “He didn’t try to kill me, and I can’t believe you would even work with people who would use such underhanded tricks to push some false story where Massimo wants me dead. Massimo shouldn’t be punished for something he didn’t do.”

“If you can look into Massimo for so many horrible things,” Elena continued, “you should at least check that your coworkers aren’t doing anything equally dirty.”

Joshua didn’t have a response to that. Elena looked away as she sipped at her soda.

The two finished the rest of their meals in silence.

Elena arrived at court nervous. She knew Joshua was on a war path.

But when it came time to be cross–examined, Elena noticed a change in Joshua’s demeanor. He didn’t seem as righteously furious as he was yesterday.

Elena doubted that anyone but herself noticed the change. Joshua still pushed strongly for holes in her story or to present Massimo as the bad guy, but he wasn’t ignoring or dismissing any facts Elena presented that messed with his story.

“Who gave you the gun?” Joshua asked her.

“Massimo,” Elena stated. “But he took it from someone else.”

“Did he load the bullets?”

Elena doubted that she was a perfect witness for the defense. Joshua definitely drew attention to unfavorable details. But the prosecutor refused to play dirty.

And when he told Elena that he had no further questions, Elena could tell from the slump in his posture that he had really investigated his coworkers–there was no other reason Joshua would refuse to look her in the eye.

As Elena took her seat back in the audience section, Massimo’s lawyer rose to his feet.

“I would like to discuss the matter of the physical evidence in this case,” he declared.

As the judge nodded, the lawyer continued, “The prosecution found evidence of several blank bullets being found at the scene–and our witnesses confirm this evidence. But was the live, deadly bullet ever found?”
