The next day Luca and Elena quickly caught Massimo up to speed with all the mafla happenings he’d missed during his trial.
“Finally, there’s the matter of security,” Luca pointed out. “The measures we took after Tyler Morello’s attack are mostly fine as they are-
“But we should check for more bugs now that we know the police were listening in,” Elena finished.
Massimo nodded. “Get the servants equipped with the proper gear to run more tests.”
“We also should go through any technology–it’s not impossible the cops messed with our personal equipment,” Luca suggested.
“What, like turning on a phone’s microphone remotely?” Elena asked.
“Exactly,” Luca confirmed.
Massimo took out his personal phone and set it on his desk. “We should stick to just burners for now then.”
Elena hesitated only a moment before she took out her two phones. She set them down next to Massimo’s.
“What are you doing?” Massimo asked.
“You just said we need to check all our devices?” Elena replied hesitantly.
“It’s unnecessary for you to do that,” Massimo said.
“Is it?” Luca asked. “You normally like to be thorough, sir.”
Massimo glared at Luca.
“Luca’s right,” Elena agreed. “What if someone managed to hack my phone?”
“The police transcripts that were submitted as part of my trial don’t support that theory,” Massimo said dismissively. “It’s more likely something on the estate or my person–not something staff–owned.”
“Likely, but not guaranteed,” Elena protested.
Massimo only huffed. “You two might have gotten used to playing dons, but don’t forget who’s the real Don of All Dons.”
With a nod from Massimo, Luca took only Massimo’s phone and put it in the metal box. “I’ll try to get this back to you quickly, sir, but it will take time.”
“Be thorough, not fast,” Massimo replied. “You’re both dismissed.”
As the two left, Luca whispered, “It seems the don really does trust you, Dr. Elena.”
Elena was nearly done treating a servant who had fainted when the doorbell rang. Since she was already nearby, she answered it.
Joshua Millers stood on the Ferraro estate’s front steps. “Elena, I didn’t know you’d be working today. But I suppose this works out well this way, too.”
“Joshua, you can’t be here,” Elena hissed. “Did you forget you nearly got Massimo thrown in prison?”
“That’s why I’m here. I want to apologize to you and Massimo.”

“Oh, do you now?” Massimo called out.
Elena turned to see Massimo behind her. How long had he been listening?
“I do,” Joshua replied. His stance was certain and his eyes never wavered. He was being genuine.
“Fine,” Massimo said. “I’ll hear your apology–but not here. I can’t have the place getting bugged again.”
Massimo smiled hungrily like an unfed cat, but Joshua didn’t hesitate. “How about lunch?”
Elena wasn’t sure which was worse–her long days of imprisonment at Tyler’s hands or sharing a meal with her criminal boss and the prosecutor who almost got him imprisoned.
The environment wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t great. Joshua had chosen a chain family restaurant, the sort of place that mostly sold different burgers and fries. Massimo, in his ridiculously expensive suit that was worth more than the entire building, looked terribly out of place.
Not to mention how Massimo squinted at the menu like it had personally offended him.
Then Joshua himself was awkward. Though he had spoken confidently, his demeanor had quickly shifted. He was more embarrassed and slow to act now.
Elena wondered if she had somehow stumbled into a new form of torture. They had only just ordered, but this meal was already unbearably awkward.
“I want to apologize to you, Elena, first,” Joshua suddenly said.
His sincere gaze pinned Elena to the spot. She could barely nod at him to continue, but she managed. Joshua nodded back at her, as if gathering his strength.
“I looked into the police officers and you were right,” Joshua admitted. “They had made a lot of deals off the record to get those mafia women to testify. They used practically every trick you could think of–I’m sorry I didn’t believe you.”
Joshua suddenly turned to face Massimo. “I never wanted to play dirty. I wanted to beat you, Mr. Ferraro, and I still do, but only fair and square–it doesn’t mean anything otherwise.”
Massimo raised an eyebrow at that.
“I mean it,” Joshua affirmed. “If I have to break the rules to get you thrown in prison, then that makes me no better than a criminal.”
Massimo studied Joshua silently. He was a relatively simple, straight–forward man–Massimo supposed he could respect that. And Massimo also had to consider that Elena saw Joshua as someone worth having around considering she married him–that had to count for something, too.
