“I understand your need to see the person who wronged your woman brought down,” Massimo finally stated. ” But you need to first make sure Elena is okay before diving head–first into a case.”

Joshua at least had the good sense to look sheepish at that. Good–Massimo had done his job.

Elena was surprised the conversation had stayed civil. The meal was over, and Joshua and Massimo hadn’t even come close to fighting! Could the two really be getting along?

“I need to get back to work, but take my business card,” Joshua said in place of goodbye. He offered Massimo a glossy little card with Joshua’s name, work address, and phone number on it.

“And you still have my number from the police wiretapping my estate,” Massimo replied. He had the look of a tiger ready to pounce.

Elena knew this was the end–surely the fighting would start any moment.

But instead of promising to return the favor or throwing a punch, Massimo actually took the card. Elena was shocked once more. The moment Joshua left, the don began typing in the number.

“I’m surprised,” Elena confessed. “I didn’t realize you two could actually get along.”

“We can’t and we won’t,” Massimo instantly replied.

“Then why are you putting his number into your phone’s contacts?” Elena insisted. “And your burner phone at that. You can’t even wait to get your real phone back!”

“I’ll transfer the data later,” Massimo explained. “And I’m not saving him as a contact–I’m blocking his number.

Massimo let Elena return home after lunch. She was grateful to have the rest of the day off–that conversation really stressed her out. Elena was glad that nothing too bad had happened though–that might be the closest thing to a peaceful meal those two men would ever have together.

“El, you’re back already?” Aria greeted her roommate.

Elena smiled. She hadn’t seen Aria since they both were kidnapped. Elena hadn’t wanted to push her friend to come back home, but Aria had texted last night that she finally felt ready to go back to the apartment.

It almost felt like a normal day. Aria was painting her nails while watching something on TV. But there was one thing obviously out of place and different.

There were a bunch of big cardboard boxes folded down and left by the couch. And plenty of packing tape and bubble wrap, too.

“What’s going on?” Elena asked.

Aria smiled sadly. “I’m sure you’ve heard, but Massimo and I are getting divorced. And well, I guess I feel like I should start a new chapter of my life, so I’m moving out of state.”

Elena knew Massimo had talked about getting divorced, but when she heard it from Aria, the situation felt so much worse. Elena had to remember that it wasn’t just Massimo’s wife, but her best friend Aria who was getting hurt.

But that Aria would be so upset by the divorce that she would need to move? And out of New York at that?

“But you can’t,” Elena protested. “You love it here. Don’t you remember picking out this place together and how

“Better than none at all. You completely forgot to take any pictures of my birthday party last year.‘

“Don’t remind me, El! I’m still annoyed. I spent hours getting this place decorated and I don’t have a single pic to show for it.”
