“There’s less cops this way,” Massimo had said simply.
As if that explained it all. Elena truly couldn’t understand him sometimes.
It wasn’t long into their return trip when they both agreed to take a break. They stopped at a small town diner to get some breakfast.
“I love small towns like these,” Elena said as she admired the plate–sized pancakes, golden brown hash browns, and delicious smelling eggs and bacon she had been served.
Massimo only raised an eyebrow. He looked skeptically at his french toast–like it somehow confused him. He took a sip of his black coffee.
“I mean it,” Elena insisted. ”
“Places like these are common,” Massimo replied. “They’re a painfully average experience.”
“Neither of us had average experiences growing up,” Elena retorted. “I always dreamed of doing ‘normal‘ stuff with my mother or high school friend.”
“Oh?” Massimo asked simply. “And what counts as normal?”
“Going on nature walks, stopping by the local movie theater, window shopping downtown, spending an afternoon at the library–stuff like that,” Elena explained. “Don’t you think that all sounds like normal stuff?”
“I never claimed to be an expert,” Massimo said. “You’re right–I have never experienced anything like that.” “Why don’t we do something like that then,” Elena suggested. “We don’t need to get back to New York in a hurry.” Massimo frowned, but he didn’t disagree. “If the sign on the road is correct, there’s supposedly a local movie theater within a block of here.”
So the two went to the movie theater.
Elena was shocked that Massimo had agreed to her suggestion, but she was even more surprised that Massimo had never gone to a public movie theater. She would’ve expected Aria to drag him along to see some horror film as an excuse to cuddle and have a romantic date.
Or maybe for his high school classmates to invite him over as an easy weekend plan. But then again, given how Massimo talked about his upbringing, Elena imagined he was home–schooled. His grandfather probably meticulously chose his tutors to make him a better Mafia King.
“How is this place still in business,” Massimo wondered as they got to their seats. “There’s not another customer in sight.”
“Think of it as the VIP section of a restaurant,” Elena joked. “Or like your private jet.”
“Those experiences are completely different,” Massimo replied seriously.
“They’re exactly the same,” Elena said. “Just pretend you rented out the whole place. Now don’t be a grump—the movie is starting!”
Massimo and Elena waited until they were back on the road to talk about the movie. Massimo didn’t see the point in waiting, but Elena insisted it was part of the experience.
“So?” she asked. “What did you think?”

“It was okay,” Massimo replied.
“Don’t overwhelm me with details,” Elena joked.
Massimo wanted to roll his eyes but he was driving. He kept the from his posture. “What did you think?” he asked.
straight ahead and hoped Elena got his point
“Oh, it was awful,” Elena replied with no hesitation. “It was like a cheap knockoff version of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.”
Massimo hadn’t noticed the connection unti
had pointed it
out, but it seemed obvious now.
“They made the love story so much worse,” Elena continued. “The two leads didn’t have any personality, and I definitely didn’t believe they were in love. Plus the villain came out of nowhere.”
“That’s a generous take,” Massimo said.
“They forced him into every scene,” Elena complained. “It was terrible!”
Despite the fact she was ripping the movie to shreds, Massimo couldn’t notice how excited Elena got as she talked. He could listen to her analyze the movie for the entire drive and not get bored.
Maybe they should do more of these so–called ‘normal‘ activities again.
Finally the two arrived back at the Ferraro estate. Between their late start and stops for the diner and the movie theater, it was nearly evening again.
Elena sighed. She wasn’t looking forward to taking the bus back home at this hour.
“I guess I should head out,” she said sadly.
