Chapter 129
Massimo quickly took stock of the situation. Rocco had been swimming nearby Riley, so he swam his way over to
her.
“Where?” he asked harshly.
Luckily, Riley understood not to waste time. She pointed to a spot with a few bubbles.
“I can’t grab him. I think he got pulled down by a current or something
Massimo didn’t listen to the rest of what she said. He dove under water and looked for
Elena made her way just as quickly to the shore. She ran further up the beach to grab her medical bag and bring it back to the shoreline.
She took one of the beach towels the men had been sitting on for good measure. Elena prepped the area for Rocco to be laid down.
Elena finished not a moment too soon. Massimo emerged from the water with Rocco in his arms—he wasn’t breathing. Massimo gently placed Rocco on top of the towel.
Elena checked Rocco’s vitals. She confirmed Rocco’s breathing had stopped, but his pulse was still going—faint, but it was there.
Elena did CPR. Seconds felt like years as she worked.
After a moment, Rocco coughed and tried to stand up. Elena heard everyone else collectively let go of their held breaths.
Everything was going to be okay.
After Elena had confirmed Rocco would be alright, Don Nico looked at Massimo.
“Why don’t we call it a day?” Nico suggested. “We did arrive early after all, so there’s no need to stay out late.”
Massimo wanted to protest, but Elena’s expression told him all he needed to hear–Elena thought it would be a bad idea to not agree.
As Massimo observed the somber faces around him, he understood Elena’s silent warning. Things wouldn’t end well if they didn’t take a break.
“Agreed, but let me treat you all to dinner later,” Massimo offered. “There’s a wonderful steakhouse only twenty minutes away.”
Nico’s smile grew tense. “Let’s stay in the hotel for tonight,” he suggested. “We can still meet up and have a lovely dinner there I’m sure.”
Massimo frowned. It was the first rule of hosting to never let your guest have a hotel meal–Fabio had insisted on that. It made the host seem lazy and not aware of the area or his guests‘ preferences–and Massimo was inclined to agree with that judgment.
“I agree,” Beatrice spoke up and linked arms with her husband. “It’s not like you had reservations already made, right, Massimo?”
Massimo’s frown grew even deeper. “No,” he admitted.
“Great,” Beatrice said. “Then it’s decided. Let’s meet in the hotel lobby at 9.”

Elena kept up her cheerful attitude until she and Massimo parted with the Contis. After that, it was too exhausting –especially when Massimo was clearly annoyed.
“Things are going well, all things considered,” Elena said finally as they rode the elevator up to the third floor.
Massimo only grunted. Elena decided she had dealt with enough problems today–she wasn’t going to get into an argument with her boss, if she could help it.
They silently made their way to their room. But when Elena swiped the key card on the door and opened it, she was greeted by an unexpected sight.
