Chapter 128
At least the woman looked more relaxed as they waded in the water. Elena decided to excuse herself and go hang out with them—she figured she would have a better chance at befriending the mafia women than their husbands.
“Elena, right?” Beatrice asked. “You’re the new family doctor, correct?”
Elena nodded.
Luna laughed. “How did you manage that?”
Riley elbowed Luna. “Be nice,” she warned.
“I applied and was the best candidate,” Elena explained.
Beatrice raised an eyebrow. “You must have been–Massimo is such a misogynist we figured he would never hire
a woman for any job but housekeeper. You must be really good at your job.”
“I like to think so,” Elena replied.
“He’s obviously changed since he was little, Bea,” Luna spoke up. “Maybe he’s finally grown up?”
“Maybe,” Beatrice replied.
“Sorry,” Elena said suddenly, “but are you biologically related to Massimo?”
“Just me and Bea,” Luna replied. “Well, Rocco too, but he was a sick kid so he missed a lot of the big family meetings.”
“Lucky prick,” Beatrice muttered.
“Our husbands married into the Conti family and got all the perks,” Luna finished with a teasing smile.
“Do you have any fun stories from when you were younger?” Elena asked, hoping to bring up sweet memories between the cousins–and get them in the right mindset for burying the old Ferraro and Conti grudges. “I’m sure even Massimo must have gotten up to some trouble as a kid.”
Beatrice frowned. “We really only met as a big family once a year. And that was always more business than pleasure.”
“Nothing like how we do things nowadays,” Luna added. “And that was back before Massimo fully took on the role of Don of All Dons.”
“He was still in training for it,” Beatrice agreed. “I don’t think he came to any of those meetings after his parents died.”
Luna nodded. “His grandfather practically hid him from us. And then the meetings were all but cancelled a year after that–now we just send a bare–bones report and call it a day.”
Elena frowned. “Surely there has to have been some fun moments? I remember going to my first mafia meeting and filling my brother’s pockets with as many tiny sandwiches as we could fit.”
Luna laughed. “Oh, I like you! You’re hilarious.”
Beatrice rolled her eyes fondly. “You were no better–remember when you convinced Rocco to sneak sips of Mom’s wine?”
Luna clamped a hand over her mouth. “:I had completely forgotten that. He got all the little boys in on it.”

“Even Massimo?” Elena asked.
Luna nodded. “Rocco was very persuasive as a kid. He could get grown adults to listen to him–they only problem was Rocco himself was always listening to bad influences.”
“You got us all into trouble a lot, Luna,” Beatrice said. “Remember when you got us all to work together to hide Uncle Jeff’s coat where the servants couldn’t find it?”
“I stand by that decision,” Luna insisted. “Jeff was a jerk–even Massimo hated the guy”
“Massimo was a little demon himself,” Beatrice argued. “He didn’t like Uncle Jeff be the asshole department. But that didn’t mean you had to get us all in trouble for some stop
beating him in prenk”
“I seem to recall someone stealing some decorations and getting us all distracted during a meeting on year.” Massimo had let the conversation between himself and the Conti men die. Rocco was the only one who replied with more than three words anyways. Massimo was about to call this whole trip a stupid idea when he heard laughter from the water.
The woman had stopped swimming for the most part, preferring to just stand in the ocean. But they were smiling and laughing. Massimo couldn’t recall ever seeing smiles that blindingly bright before.
“Beatrice and Luna have really grown up into fine women,” Rocco observed.
