Chapter 139
The next day, Massimo had breakfast with Fabio. He was slightly surprised his grandfather had agreed to meet with him when Massimo called–especially after Massimo clarified it had nothing to do with work.
They ate a light meal in silence at the Ferraro estate’s dining room. Massimo was regretting dismissing the servants- at least their movements would’ve made the place feel less empty.
“So,” Fabio finally said, “I suppose this meeting must be about your divorce?”
“No,” Massimo replied. “It’s just breakfast, Fabio.”
It was Fabio’s turn to be surprised. His face quickly morphed back to something like anger. It was an expression of frustration and annoyance Massimo was very familiar with.
“Right,” Fabio grumbled. “You don’t need an old man’s advice. I see how it is.”
But then Fabio surprised Massimo again. The old man’s voice got softer and gentler.
“I can deliver the divorce papers, if you’d like,” Fabio offered.
“Aren’t you against this divorce?” Massimo asked, thoroughly confused.
“Yes,” Fabio all too quickly agreed. “But I was the one who suggested it in the first place. That means I should take responsibility.”
Massimo stayed silent for a long moment.
He truly didn’t care about such a trivial matter, but Fabio must have. Despite looking sadder than normal, he had volunteered to get involved. Even if he thought Massimo was making the wrong choice, Fabio had offered to help him make that choice and support him.
“It doesn’t matter to me who drops off the papers,” Massimo said slowly. “So, by all means, deliver them, Fabio.”
“Have you talked to your crush at all?”
Massimo nearly choked on his meal at Fabio’s casual, strange words. “What?!”
Fabio rolled his eyes. “Drink some water and stop behaving like a fool, young man,” he scolded. “I’m talking about the woman you said you loved the last time we spoke like this.”
“We’re getting long,” Massimo said neutrally.
“When do I get to meet her?” Fabio asked.
“Hopefully never, if I’m lucky,” Massimo replied.
Fabio wasn’t deterred by Massimo’s rudeness. He clearly wanted to know more about this mystery woman–he could keep wanting. That didn’t mean Massimo was going to tell him anything.
“What does she do for a living?”
“A bit of everything.”
“Is she a mafia woman?”
“Tangentially, I suppose.”
“What’s her family like?”

“About as annoying as my own.”
Fabio asked a dozen more questions, but Massimo easily evaded them. He gave generic answers wherever he could.
He knew if Fabio knew who Elena was, he wouldn’t be able to keep Massimo’s feelings a secret. That would cause many issues for Elena, who was already married. Massimo didn’t want to put Elena in a tough position- therefore, it was better to keep his grandfather in the dark about the woman Massimo had grown to care for.
Finally, Fabio gave up his relentless questioning. The old man settled into his chair with a thoughtful look on his
face.
“Whoever she is,” Fabio said, “she’s certainly had an effect on you. She’s changed you a lot, in fact.”
Massimo could only raise an eyebrow. He had no idea what tangent Fabio was about to talk on and on about.
Fabio frowned. “Don’t look so disrespectful, young man. It’s a gosh darn compliment for a rogue like you–she’s finally turned you into less of a sorry young man.”
“Has she now?” Massimo asked, already disinterested.
Fabio loved to talk forever on topics he knew nothing about. The old man was just going to spout nonsense and try to pass it off as wisdom. Unfortunately, all of Fabio’s real wisdom had been taught to Massimo when he was much
younger.
