Chapter 138

But most shockingly of all, Massimo didn’t complain. He didn’t even frown–well, no more than usual. He looked as comfortable sitting in his business class seat as he did sitting in his private jet.
Elena didn’t comment on any of this though. She didn’t want to be rude.
But, privately, Elena reflected on how many layers Massimo had. While others saw a cold, clinical, sometimes incredibly rude and ruthless Mafia King, Elena got to see more.
She saw the hesitance in his eyes and posture as he tried to puzzle out his cousins‘ emotions. She saw the casual way he cared for the mafia men under him and rewarded them lavishly for jobs well done. She saw his rare smiles that, though small, filled her with great warmth.
Elena felt lucky to see so many layers of Massimo during this trip.
Massimo and Elena returned to the Ferraro estate. It would’ve been faster if they had been able to use his jet, but all things considered, the flight home wasn’t bad. It only added on an extra hour of time between the slower plane, needing to wait for the other passengers to clear the aisles, and having to go through standard security.
And considering they were returning home early, it wasn’t like Massimo was behind schedule.
Luca wisely took one look at the two of them and asked zero questions about the trip.
“I was about to attend a meeting with some of your soldiers in your place,” Luca explained. “Would you like to go instead or should I head out?”
“I’ll go,” Massimo said automatically. “You can catch me up to speed on the drive over.”
Massimo turned to Elena. “You can stay here or head home, but I don’t expect you to be doing any more work today.”
Thankfully, Elena didn’t argue with him. “I’ll head home,” Elena said. “I want to take a shower and get to bed early.”
Massimo nodded. Before he could leave though, Elena put a hand on his shoulder.
“Just take it easy,” Elena said. “Remember what I said about how things will work out.”
Though Massimo doubted Elena’s outlook, he nodded anyway.
Elena returned to work the next day. She was talking with Massimo when he suddenly got a call.
The caller ID told them it was Nico Conti calling. Massimo answered the phone. He waved Elena out of his office.
Elena paced during the whole duration of the call. Though she was confident that the Contis had enjoyed themselves, she couldn’t help but feel Massimo’s own doubt seeping in on her judgment.
What if Elena had misjudged the situation? What if it really was all an act? Had she accidentally given the Conti family valuable information–information that would hurt Massimo if his enemies got their hands on it?
Finally, Massimo’s call ended. Elena re–entered the office.
“So?” she asked simply.
“The full report will be emailed to us later, but a minor family was trying to break one of my rules by harming medical personnel,” Massimo explained. “The Conti family felt that they needed to personally take care of the matter ruthlessly and efficiently–they couldn’t claim to be my allies otherwise.”

“Is that really what they said?” Elena asked. She couldn’t help the excitement from creeping into her voice.
