The Mafia King's Unknown Doctor Wife novel Chapter 14

Chapter 14

As Elena blinked her eyes open, she saw Massimo’s men dragging away the traitor, Don Contiwho wasn’t moving at all. The band was playing again, though no one was dancing. Everyone near Elena had already moved, and they gave Massimo a similar wide berth.

She struggled to lift her upper body from the floor and get better look around. A shooting pain through her shoulder halted her movement.

Instinctively, Elena lifted her other arm to her injury. Her fingers didn’t make contact with her skin though. There was a man’s jacket over it.

Her boss’s jacket.

Don’t use that as a bandage, doctor,Massimo said flatly.

Massimo took back his jacket and knelt down next to Elena. He placed a towel on top of her wound.

None too gently.

Elena gasped as she saw stars from her intense pain.

Massimo gritted his teeth as he tried to stop the bleeding.

This wasn’t supposed to happen.

How had he missed the traitor lining up his shot? No, why hadn’t he kept more men back instead of sending them to interrogate the mole? This sort of thing could’ve been prevented, if only Massimo had acted like a real man and thought about the situation.

And how did Massimo miss a threat as obvious as Giuseppe Conti? Who cared if he was his second cousin?

Grandfather Fabio had trained him better than this.

And now, because of his failings, Massimo’s doctor had taken a bullet for him.

She wouldn’t have even been in harm’s way if he hadn’t acted so rashly. Dr. Elena was only supposed to be onsite for medical emergencieslike if all the dancing led one of the older men to dislocate their hips. Massimo never thought Elena would take a bullet for him.

Massimo pressed down harder on Elena’s shoulder, ignoring her moans. The bleeding was finally starting to slow.

A don shouldn’t need to be protected by someone so green. Elena didn’t even carry a gun! She had no business getting involved-

Except Massimo knew that wasn’t true. He’d questioned her loyalties. Even if Elena wasn’t a mafia soldier, questioning someone’s honor was still an insult.

Massimo felt foolish. He wasn’t that suspicious of Elenao more suspicious than he was of anyone in his life. The odds of her being a spy were close to zero.

And even if she was, Massimo knew he could handle it. Not ing made that more clear than feeling Elena’s sluggish pulse.

Massimo could’ve taken a bullet like it was nothing. But instead a woman had taken it for him. What kind of Don of All Dons let that happen?

Luca quietly approached Massimo. No one else was injured in either altercation. I’ve prepared the guest room for

her.

Elena’s eyes fluttered open at the secondincommand’s words. Ththanks, Luca.

And then Massimo’s doctor did something incredibly stupid She tried to stand.

What do you think you’re doing,Massimo hissed.

Heading upstairs,Elena slurred back. Your party’s not over yet, so I

Her words trailed off as she lifted her upper body. Her whole frame trembled, but she was still trying to tough it

out.

Massimo grabbed her, careful of her wound. He lifted her into a princess carry.

He shot his secondincommand a simple look. He didn’t need to tell Luca, Wrap things up in the next hour or two, and then thoroughly investigate the mole and the Conti family. They had worked together long enough that his man got the message.
