The Mafia King's Unknown Doctor Wife novel Chapter 15

Chapter 15

Elena swallowed hard. Anesthesia please.

As Massimo gathered his tools, Elena thought back to her early years with the rest of her family.

Her father would often come back from work with some kind of injury. Normally just scrapes and bruises, but bullet wounds were not unheard of. When Matteo was old enough to tag along, even he couldn’t be spared from the inherent violence of mafia dealings.

Being part of the criminal underworld meant injuries became routine. While the Ferraro family hospital treated many mafia members, not all would be welcomed with open arms. And some didn’t have the time to wait for a doctor.

Massimo, Elena mused, probably always stitched himself up after an altercation. And when every second counts, why would he waste time getting anesthesia when he could tough it out?

But Elena was no longer part of her mafia family, and she refused to trade the Vitales for another prison. She wasn’t going to get used to any part of this dark world.

Massimo took a needle and delicately injected it in Elena’s upper arm.

What was that?

The anesthesia,Massimo said, like it was obvious.

No, what kind of anesthesia was it?Elena insisted.

Massimo shrugged. Does it matter?

Of course it matters! General, local, regional, monitoredthey’re all very different. And that’s not even getting into the exact chemicals that have different effects, too.

Massimo didn’t roll his eyes, though Elena could tell he wanted to. You won’t feel much but you’ll stay awake, if that’s your concern.

Regional then?Elena muttered to herself.

Already, she could feel the numbing agent working its way to her injured shoulder. The pain from her bullet wound began to dull. She didn’t feel any more tired than she did before, which was good.

She remembered Massimo’s subpar stitch work and wanted to be awake to instruct him. The last thing she wanted was a scar to permanently remind her of this disaster evening.

Elena jolted from her musings as Massimo approached her with a pair of scissors. What do you think you’re doing?

Massimo placed a hand on Elena’s uninjured shoulder, gently keeping her pinned. Relax. And don’t move.

It’d be easier to relax if you told me what you were doing, Elena huffed.

Massimo paused for a second. I need to remove part of your dress to see the wound better. It’s easier to cut the dress than get you out of it.

Oh,Elena said sheepishly. Yes, I guess that does make sense.

With that out of the way, Massimo carefully cut up part of lena’s dress. She could hear the snipsnipsnip of the scissors, but whatever anesthesia she’d been given had numbed her entire upper body. If Massimo hadn’t said anything, Elena would’ve never known he’d removed a portion of her clothes.

I’m going to search for any metal shrapnel now,Massim said flatly.

He picked up a pair of forceps and pliers but Elena couldn’t focus on his movements. Her head was starting to

swim.

Is this hurting?Massimo asked suddenly. Do you need more anesthesia?

Elena tried to shake her head, but wasn’t sure she succeeded. I’m okay. I think the blood loss is getting to me, but you’re fine.

Massimo’s mouth warped into a thin line. Tell me if that changes,he said before focusing on his work.

Elena felt her mind growing scattered. She felt detached from her body yet completely drunk.

Wait,Elena said urgently.

At her tone, Massimo instantly looked up. Yes?

How much of the dress did you cut? Is my tit out?

Massimo let out a breathor was that a laugh? Dr. Elena, can assure you, I’m looking at the bullet wound, not anything else.
