Chapter 141
Elena opened the door. She saw Mr. Fabio standing there. His smile was sad and he held a large pile of papers.
“Mr. Fabio, hello,” Elena said. “Why don’t you come in for some tea?”
She ushered the old man into her home. She slowly readied two cups of tea. After all, Elena knew why Mr. Fabio was here before he even said a word.
“Thank you,” Mr. Fabio said, taking a tea cup.
He let himself get halfway through his drink before his expression got serious. Elena couldn’t bear to see the old
man so upset.
“Those are divorce papers, aren’t they?” Elena asked softly.
Mr. Fabio nodded his head. “I’m sorry, my dear. I really tried to make my terrible grandson see reason.”
Elena laid her hand on top of Mr. Fabio’s. “It’s not your fault. Honestly, I knew this was coming for a while now.”
“You’re a strong woman, Elena,” Mr. Fabio said sincerely. “Don’t let this get you down. You’re better than that.”
Elena could only nod–she didn’t have the strength to say another word.
An uncomfortable silence stretched across the apartment. Time seemed to slow down.
Elena couldn’t think.
Mr. Fabio suddenly pointed at her roommate’s boxes that were piled up in the living room–as well as many more empty boxes. “You sure have a lot of those,” he said.
Grateful for the subject change, Elena replied, “My roommate is moving out, and I have to find a new place by the end of the month, too.”
Fabio nodded at Elena’s story. “I hope that, though this marriage wasn’t the fresh start you wanted, you still find a new beginning for yourself.”
Elena considered Mr. Fabio’s words. She had managed to finally become a real, practicing doctor and how rewarding that has already been. Though the mafia was dangerous, Elena loved working alongside Massimo.
“I think I’ve already found one through my work,” Elena replied. “And I have my suspicions that you pulled some strings to get me a position at St. Camillus. So thank you, Mr. Fabio–for everything.”
Massimo recalled Fabio carefully handing him a card with the same digits on it, but he must have been mistaken. There was no reason to block his wife’s original number.
But since Massimo didn’t remember blocking the number, he clicked on the contact. Sure enough, it pulled up the last message he had sent to his soon–to–be ex–wife and her response.
“Can’t wait to meet you in person <3”
However, there were hundreds of new messages that came after. Messages Massimo never remembered getting. Day after day his wife had continued to text him from this number.
“I’m sorry about missing our date. There was a car crash–people needed my help. They would’ve died if I hadn’t stayed.”
But Aria had shown up that night at Caffè Bella. Why was she apologizing for missing it?
